EXCLUSIVE: LAWSUIT AGAINST ISRAEL BASEBALL LEAGUE FOUNDER ALLEGES SECURITIES FRAUD TIED TO IBL'S OPENING

The rumoured financial problems and improprieties clouding the future of the Israel Baseball League and its founder exploded to the surface today with the details of a federal lawsuit filed against Boston-based businessman Larry Baras.

The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Massachusetts and obtained exclusively by Tabloid Baby, alleges fraud, securities fraud and breach of fiduciary duty on the part of the embattled founder and managing director of Israel's first Major League-style professional baseball league.

Baras has been in headlines in recent months due to allegations that he owes money to players and vendors involved in the league's first season, and to the frustration of many, has been silent on the question of whether the lBL will return for Season Two. He has yet to address serious questions abut the IBL's management in wake of the disturbing August 28th report on the first season by Our Man Elli In Israel.

In the lawsuit filed September 24th, Natalie Blacher of Dade County, Florida sued Lawrence S. Baras and SJR Foods, Inc., claiming that the founder of the Israel Baseball League duped her out of $275,000 that was supposed to go into a successful bagel company, but instead went to “his personal living expenses or expenses which should be charged to IBL.”

Blacher contends that she spent $275,000 to buy stock in Baras’ SJR Foods on Baras’ word that the company was generating $10 million per year, only to discover that the company was $1,500,000 in debt and that despite his claims, Baras was spending all his time—and possibly stockholders’ money-- on the IBL.

Unholey

The story begins in early 1998. Blacher says she was Senior Director of Produce Marketing for Burger King when Baras and his wife Robyn approached her to pitch BKC a product called the “Unholey Bagel”—“a bagel without a hole filled with cream cheese.” Burger King passed on the Unholey Bagel idea, but Bacher stayed in contact with the couple. After leaving Burger King later that year, she says she provided informal consulting services to them.

According to the lawsuit, in the summer of 1999, “Baras told Blacher he intended to raise substantial capital for the Company through a private placement of stock… Baras represented… that the Company was already generating revenues of approximately $10 million per year and that his plan was to increase revenues to $100 million within a couple of years.”

Blacher says she invested a total of $275,000 in the company, relying on Baras’ word that the “company was doing well. After years of frustration in getting financial statements from Baras, Blacher says she found out in November 2006 that “the company had a negative worth of almost $1,500,000.

Promises, Promises

The lawsuit elaborates: “In mid-2006, Blacher learned through a Google search that Baras had started a new venture, the Israel Baseball League (‘IBL’) and that it was receiving widespread press in major media, e.g. the New York Times, New York Daily News, Boston Globe and YouTube. In response to Blacher’s inquiry, Baras told her that his involvement with IBL was very limited.

“In late 2006 and early 2007, it became increasingly difficult for Blacher to communicate with Baras. Baras’ apparent preoccupation with the IBL, as opposed to the Company, caused Blacher to be very concerned. In February, 2007, she telephoned Baras and, again, complained about the lack of financial documentation and demanded financial statements as soon as possible. Baras promised her that he would.

“…from February through May 2007, contrary to his promise and fiduciary duties to Blacher and despite his verbal assurances, Baras failed to provide to provide Blacher with any financial statements or otherwise comply with her request for financial statements and the other material documentation regarding the Company’s business and financial condition.

24/7

"On April 26, 2007, in a video posted on the IBL website (www.IsraelBaseballLeague.com), Baras stated that he had been working ‘24/7’ on the IBL for the past two years…

“During the summer of 2007, Baras’ principal excuse for failure to provide the requested financial information was that he was busy with the IBL’s inaugural season.”

The suit alleges that “Baras has operated the Company and IBL from the same location" and "may have charged and may be continuing to charge the company substantial amounts which represent either his personal living expenses or expenses which should be charged to IBL.”

Blacher is seeking $275,000 plus 6% interest from the investment dates and attorneys' fees.

The light bulb moment in The Writers' Strike

Barry Levinson was quoted about the Writers Strike:
"It used to make more sense when the writers and all the guilds negotiated with studio and TV people; Paley owned CBS, Sarnoff owned NBC, and you had studio heads like Jack Warner and Zanuck. Now you've got writers who are negotiating with giant corporations, and there's a whole other sensibility. NBC is part of General Electric, and General Electric has enough contempt for its entertainment division even without a strike. Writers are like little gnats to them. So this is a whole other game, a bit like a small little guy against these behemoths. Not anything close to what it used to be in the past. GE looks at all its people and all its assets and asks, If we're struck for seven months, what does it mean in terms of the bottom line? It's probably like a minor dent in their portfolio."
It was an aha, "light bulb" moment for a lot of people, but here at Tabloid Baby, the light bulb moment occurred in 1987. And it was the last GE light bulb we'd buy.

It was twenty years ago and three weeks ago that we writers and other members of NABET, the National Associaton of Broadcast Engineers and Technicians, ended a long and bitter strike against NBC. NBC had been acquired the year before by General Electric, the multinational conglomerate and fourth-largest corporate producer of air pollution in the United States, best known for its divisions that made lightbulbs, washing machines, refrigerators and nuclear weapons. Key to getting the new era underway was forcing NABET, then known as "the Cadillac of unions" into the car compactor.

As the New York Times reported at the time: "Carrie Biggs-Adams, president of Local 53, said few workers were pleased with the three-year agreement, and exhaustion played a role in ending a walkout that cost the union $700,000 a month in strike benefits.

"'After 118 days, people tend to get tired,' she said. ''It's very, very hard to go so long without income.'''

We just remember walking the picket lines in New York, Washington, D.C. and Chicago, mainly in New York, outside 30 Rockefeller Plaza. We tried to convince celebrities not to cross our picket lines to appear on Letterman's show, and phoned in stories to Page Six about the ones who did. Like our fellow WGA members today, we rallied with Jesse Jackson and chanted and and stood behind police barricades for hours on end. And looking up at the RCA Building above us-- soon to be renamed the GE Building-- we realized how small and inconsequential we looked to the suits on the high floors.

Today they make sketch comedy jokes about it on 30 Rock, but it marked a big change in the industry 20 years ago. And that's what we writers are up against today.

Michael Lohan is #1 on E! network's Daily 10!

Host's mockery called "conflict of interest"
because E! is producing a rival reality show
with Lohan's ex-wife

The trailer for The Michael Lohan Reality Project not only drew more than 100,000 viewers on YouTube this week-- it was also the #1 story on the E! Entertainment network's Daily 10 news show.

Of course, the low-budget humour-challenged timefiller made fun of Michael and the potential reality series. What they didn't 'fess up to was their conflict-of-interest. See, suits at E!-- whose online gossip reported wrongly that the reality trailer was a fake-- passed on the Lohan show, because they're producing the despicable reality show, Momager, starring Michael's ex-wife and Lindsay's biological mother, Dina!

Thanks for the publicity, guys!

Our Man Elli remembers Mailer (and his man Ali)

Elli Wohlgelernter writes:

"I only met Norman Mailer once, at the Ali-Norton fight at Yankee Stadium, September 28, 1976. It was a controversial fight then, and the result-- an Ali win by decision-- remains in question to this day. I thought Norton had won, as did he and many others. after the fight-- I had jumped over the railing and was sitting in the eighth row ringside-- Mailer stood and discussed with everyone who was milling around why he thought Ali won, showing his notes round by round, and why Ali's use of his rope-a-dope trick had saved him, as it had against Foreman two years earlier (the subject of his book, The Fight).

"Standing nearby was his latest and last wife, the lovely model Norris Church. A bunch of fellas from the 'hood, watching Mailer's pontification over the fight, asked, 'Who's he?'

"Informed he was one of the preeminent writers of our time, they were uninterested. 'Yeah? Who's da broad?'"

(And from all the Tabloid Baby staff: Condolences to the Mailers... and Happy birthday, Elli!)

Three facts about Norman Mailer

1) The great author, tabloid journalist, media figure and wife stabber invented the term "factoid," which referred to a misstated fact that appeared in a news story and is then repeated in subsequent stories. The mass media got it wrong by using "factoid" to describe a tiny fact.

2) Mailer may be the latest victim of the Ramones curse. He was a friend and mentor to Legs McNeil, Ramones sidekick and author of the punk rock bible, Please Kill Me.

3) Mailer had agreed to appear in the landmark Court TV miniseries, Adults Only: The Secret History of The Other Hollywood, produced by our pals at Frozen Pictures (starring Legs, and the basis for Legs' book, The Other Hollywood. The Court TV suits declined, telling the producers that none of their viewers knew who he was.

Personal assistant tells how she killed Linda Stein

The New York City tabloids lay out the details of the Ramones curse murder, in black and white:

NY Daily News:

Natavia Lowery, 26, was charged with second-degree murder in the baffling Oct. 30 slaying of Linda Stein, a punk-rock pioneer who became wealthy by selling Manhattan's best real estate to Madonna, Sting, Steven Spielberg and other celebs.

Natavia Lowery calmly cleaned up the Fifth Ave. penthouse after killing the "Realtor to the Stars" in a rage-- then filched the dead woman's cell phone and used her ATM card to steal $800, cops said.

NY Post:

In the end, it appears the 62-year-old Stein's infamously volatile personality clashed violently with Lowery's short fuse, triggering the murder.

"She claimed Ms. Stein had been verbally abusive to her and had blown marijuana smoke into her face several times over her objections," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said as he announced the arrest.

"She claimed Stein used profanity and derogatory language, and she waved an object that Lowery described as a yoga stick at her. Lowery said she grabbed the yoga stick from Stein's hands and struck her with it six or seven times."

Lowery, who is black, said some of that derogatory language was racially offensive.

NY Times:

Officials said they believed that Ms. Stein... had tempestuous dealings with Ms. Lowery that escalated from animosity to violence.

“It was that Linda just kept yelling at her, over everything,” one law enforcement official said. “They fought. It was like a continuous thing, like a buildup.”

The final episode exploded in Ms. Stein’s 18th-floor apartment at 965 Fifth Avenue.

Ms. Lowery’s account... was videotaped.

NY Daily News:

She said on the morning of Oct. 30 she got into an argument with the brash Stein, who co-managed the Ramones before she began selling penthouses to the rich and famous.

Stein, 62, who was battling cancer, started blowing pot smoke in her face and berating her as she worked on the computer, Lowery told cops.

NY Times:

(A family lawyer said that Ms. Stein occasionally smoked marijuana to ease the pain from recurring bouts of cancer.)

NY Daily News:

"Get the f---ing e-mails! How can you be so f---ing slow!" Stein supposedly bellowed, a police source said.

Stein, who had private yoga sessions in her $2.5 million pad, was waving a 4-pound strength-building yoga stick at Lowery as she yelled, the assistant told cops.

After Lowery retrieved the e-mails, Stein offered to buy her lunch as a peace offering.

"I've got my own money. I don't need you to buy me lunch," the assistant said indignantly.

"Black people don't have any money," Stein retorted, according to Lowery. "Save your money and I'll buy you lunch."

An enraged Lowery grabbed the yoga stick from Stein and hit her with it a half-dozen times until she was face-down in a pool of blood, police said.

NY Times:

Ms. Lowery told the detectives that she used the pole-like stick (which another official said might be a Pilates stick) to hit Ms. Stein in the back of the head and neck, officials said. At five feet three inches, according to her driver’s license, Ms. Lowery would have been only slightly taller than the five-foot Ms. Stein.

NY Daily News

Authorities said Lowery had the presence of mind to tidy up the apartment after the slaying and leave with the murder weapon, which is still missing.

She also took Stein's phone, and even answered it, telling a caller the broker was too busy to talk, police said. She later returned the phone to the apartment, a source said.

Her trips in and out were captured on surveillance tape, which showed her nonchalantly carrying out a bag, police said. She checked the bottom of her shoes once after leaving, possibly examining them for blood, sources said.

NY Post:

The big break in the case came Thursday when Lowery out of the blue called Detective Kevin Walla, of Manhattan North Homicide, to complain about the reporters who had staked out her Williamsburg apartment building.

Walla and his partner on the case, Detective Antonio Rivera, met her at the Kellogg's Diner on Metropolitan Avenue in Brooklyn, where it became clear that Lowery was ripe for a confession. They took her back the station house on the Lower East Side.

"It evolved into something totally different, because we took her out of her atmosphere and brought her into our atmosphere," Walla said.

NY Daily News:

During the interroga-tion, which began Thursday night and ended at 6 a.m. yesterday, Lowery presented herself as a victim who snapped under abuse.

NY Post:

About four months ago, Lowery somehow connected with Stein through a temp agency.

Stein had fired her former assistant, Raul Diaz-Bernal, 49, who rebuffed her romantic advances while getting too chummy with her clients, her friends said. She then fired her personal assistant whom she accused of siding with Diaz-Bernal.

So, the petite and fashionable Lowery got the job and began working out of Stein's home.

NY Daily News:

The suspect's lawyer, Gilbert Parris, declared her "innocent" and blasted cops for ignoring his request that Lowery not be interviewed again without him.

Police sources said Lowery waived her Miranda rights and police allowed her to eat and sleep while she was held.

NY Post:

"She's innocent! My baby is innocent," Lowery's distraught mother shouted as police led her in handcuffs out of the downtown 7th Precinct station house in handcuffs.

"Don't say a word. God is with you, baby," she said.

NY Daily News:

Lowery's family charged cops targeted her because she's black and said Stein's daughters should be suspects.

"They know who did it," said one male relative.

"But whenever there's someone involved with power and influence black people get scapegoated."

"Tell them to check on the two daughters [Mandy Stein and Samantha Stein-Wells]. They have the means and the motive."

Walla said he broke the news of the arrest to Stein-Wells, who vowed at her mother's funeral last week to get justice.

"It was very emotional," Walla said. "We had to stay with her a while and it took a while for her to take it all in. This was a shock to her. ... It was a shock it was this person."

NY Times:

Personal assistants say they face unlimited tests in a job with no fixed job description… and… say that the relationship can be complicated and far more nuanced than what moviegoers saw in “The Devil Wears Prada,” the movie based on the best seller that was a thinly disguised portrait of Anna Wintour of Vogue magazine, or in “Swimming With Sharks,” in which one character was said to have been inspired by the agent Scott Rudin.

The demanding fashion editor in the book and film “The Devil Wears Prada” “was Snow White compared to Linda,” said Steven Gaines, the author of “The Sky’s the Limit,” a book about New York real estate, and a longtime friend of Ms. Stein’s.

“I bet you Linda had been bickering, fighting and saying nasty things to this girl all along,” he added. “Linda was very, very bad on her underlings. She was really, really bad.

“Linda talked out of the side of her mouth and opened up a really big, loud, dirty mouth,” he said.

Edward Hayes, a lawyer for Seymour Stein, Ms. Stein’s former husband, and their daughters, Samantha Stein-Wells and Mandy Stein, said he believed there must be more to the story than an argument over a lunch invitation. “That’s not a good reason to beat somebody to death,” he said, adding that in his long experience as a prosecutor, he never heard of a woman beating another woman to death.

No future? Israel Baseball Leaguers gather here

“The biggest problem players have right now
is that some of us have yet to be paid
the money owed to us, along w/bank fees…
Some of the players needed/need the money
as they were recent college grads...

“Another problem is miscommunication
from the league and league reps…
Some people are not so eager to speak up
because they are afraid they will not be
asked to come back IF there is a league next year.”

Tabloid Baby is becoming the forum of record for players in the Israel Baseball League!

Since we posted Our Man Elli in Israel’s exclusive story about the possible closing of the IBL after a memorable but problem-plagued season (also notoriously and historically revealed here by Elli Wohlgelernter), we’ve received dozens of comments and off-the-record emails and news leads—many of them from the athletes who met on the ballfields of the Promised Land and are now scattered to their respective corners of the planet.

Some returned home with less money than they’d expected, due to the alleged bouncing of their last checks. Most all are frustrated that league founder Larry Baras and other execs have maintained a Western Wall of Silence around the IBL’s future.

The players’ evident goodwill and jockmanship in pointing out the pluses of their season in the Promised Land doesn’t hide their frustration that they can’t get through to the IBL leadership, to find out if there will be a Season Two:
"…the way information isn’t being shared with those affected is inconsiderate as well. I would be much less upset if I was being kept up to date with the steps people are taking to resolve the issue…
It’s clear that the players are almost begging Boston-based businessman Larry Baras to, as one emails:
"Please come forward, say anything-- tell us to go to hell, tell us you love us-- but for g-d's sake, have you no compassion at all for these players? One of us was almost killed, the conditions sucked, we were treated like shit, and you can't even now be upfront and tell us where their money is? Have you no shame?"
And another:
"Next week marks three months since the championship game and the end of the season. If so many of us have still not been paid in full, imagine how many other debts the league has incurred, and then ask yourself what realistic chances are there for the league to continue. There's obviously more to this story than we all know, lots more, despite all that's been written here on Tabloid Baby since the end of the season.

"And why people have blamed Elli Wohlgelernter for 'being negative,' when all he did was spell out the facts, as a reporter who actually went to games and reported what he saw and heard, and which we all know to be true, is beyond me. We still have not heard a word from Baras. Maybe the only answer is a class-action suit against the league, or maybe go on the record to Elli and have him write where it's at."

Does the IBL owe you money? Email us at tabloidbaby@roadrunner.com and tell us your story. We’ll make sure Our Man Elli sees it. And we'll protect your anonymity.

And to all IBL vets: Thanks for the comments. Please keep them coming. We'll keep you posted.

'Personal assistant' confesses to killing Linda Stein

Natavia Lowery, Linda Stein's personal assistant, has confessed to the murder of the former Ramones manager. The suspect told cops she bludgeoned her boss in her posh FIfth Avenue apartment because Stein yelled at her, swore at her, waved a stick at her and blew marijuana smoke into her face.

At a news conference, Police commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said Lowery had confessed to striking the former Ramones manager six or seven times on Oct. 30 with a four-pound exercise stick. (The New York Post describes it as a "metal yoga rod.")

Kelly said that in Lowery’s account, Stein (described as "tough as nails" by the Post and "rough and tumble" by the Daily News) had used “profanity and derogatory language” and refused to stop blowing smoke at her even though the smoke was making her sick. Lowery had worked for Ms. Stein for about four months, but said Ms. Stein had not verbally abused her until the day of the killing.

Natavia Lowery is set to be charged by the Manhattan district attorney’s office this evening. By later this afternoon, the "snarky" websites shoud have a lot of personal assistant jokes at the ready, and with the charges, the case is tailormade for a Law & Order spin.

Assistant arrested in murder of Linda Stein

Police today arrested the personal assistant of murdered former Ramones manager Linda Stein in Virginia Beach, Va. Natavia Lowery was in Virginia visiting her boyfriend when NYPD cops slapped on the cuffs.

An NYPD spokesman says the 26-year-old "made statements implicating herself" in the killing.

Lowery is the suspect we told you about yesterday, the woman who apparently was the last person to speak with Stein before she was murdered. She's also the one who was arrested in December on a misdemeanor charge of identity theft. She wasaccused of stealing a high school buddy's identity and using it to open accounts at Target and T-Mobile, and used the money to buy furniture.

Sources say Stein hired Lowery in early summer after firing her previous personal assistant.

Now the latest chapter in the Ramones curse has been written, and as soon as the Writers Guild strike is over, so can the ripped-from-the-headlines episode of Law & Order.

EXCLUSIVE! PRODUCERS SUE X17 PAPARAZZI AGENCY OVER LOHAN PHOTOS; LAWSUIT CHARGES BREACH OF CONTRACT & FRAUD

"They forced us to sue!
We want this lawsuit to shine a light
on the slimy practices of the new stalkerazzi..."

A pair of noted Hollywood film and documentary producers filed a potential million- dollar lawsuit this morning against the paparazzi photo agency X17, claiming breach of contract and fraud relating to photos of the reunion of Lindsay Lohan and her father Michael.

According to papers filed in Los Angeles Superior Court in Santa Monica, Burt Kearns and Brett Hudson of Frozen Pictures claim they’d “entered into a contract with Brandy Navarre & X17, Inc. on August 29, 2007, to ‘set up and shoot’ ‘exclusive pix’ (photos) of the reunion of Lindsay Lohan and her father Michael (the subject of a Frozen Pictures documentary project) in Provo, Utah” in early September, but that “on October 5, 2007, Navarre refused to pay, claiming she had made a side deal… paying an unamed third party a flat fee… and ‘assumed’ Plaintiff would share in the funds.”

The suit asks for $66,500 in unpaid fees, $200,000 in damages and a percentage of photo of video sales that could add hundreds of thousands of dollars to the total, It states that Navarre claims her photographer in Provo had organized a “flat rate” with Michael Lohan, but “wired (the money) to a bank account in someone else’s name... (I don’t know it off the top of my head). I assumed Michael would split this with you.”

According to the suit, Lohan denies making any deals with X17. Both he and his daughter Lindsay are expected to be subpoenaed to testify.

“This is a simple lawsuit. We had an written agreement to perform a service for X17. They approached us! We did our part, but X17 thought they’d get off more cheaply by double-dealing,” Kearns told Tabloidbaby.com exclusively this afternoon.

“We asked X17 nicely to pay what they owe. They forced us to sue them.”

Kearns says the photo deal was made, in part, to publicize and fund The Michael Lohan Reality Project, the continuing documentary reality seriesFrozen Pictures has been shooting since 2004 (The series’ promotional trailer was leaked to YouTube this week, generating more than 100,000 viewers in less than two days). Photos from the project have appeared numerous times on the X17 website and been sold around the world.

“We’ve been working with X17 since the spring,” says Kearns. “We thought they were the new breed. Unfortunately it’s a new breed that hands cameras to valet parking attendants and street people, that endangers lives by chasing unstable young women in cars—and doesn’t live up to its word.

“I’ve worked in the tabloid news business for close to thirty years,” Kearns, former managing editor of Hard Copy and producer of A Current Affair (and author of Tabloid Baby! -- ed.), adds. “I’ve dealt with the great paparazzi, from Zanger to Ramey to Woody. We don’t work this way. TMZ, X17-- they’re all the same. They’re slash-and-burn amateurs. We want this lawsuit to shine a light on the slimy practices of the new stalkerazzi—and to bring all their dealings and bookkeeping to light.”
(Kearns and Hudson ((formerly of The Hudson Brothers and uncle of Kate Hudson)) may be best known for writing and producing the Burt Reynolds sports comedy feature, Cloud 9, along with Academy Award winner Albert S. Ruddy; they're currently producing the musical biopic The Seventh Python. X17 made headlines for suing Internet gossip Perez Hilton.)

Conan stalker brings memories of Mrs. Letterman

The New York Times headline "Priest Jailed in Stalking of Conan O'Brien" was surely one of the funniest we've read in awhile, even topping "Paul's New Love Has Heather Hopping Mad" in today's New York Post. And the incident calls to mind the sad and scary saga of Margarate Ray, aka "Mrs. David Letterman," who stalked, bothered, worried, and trespassed in the home of David Letterman when he was hosting the same show in the same studio and timeslot that Conan occupies today.

A tabloid generation ago, Mrs. Letterman was a classic segment on A Current Affair, doing half an interview while standing on her head, and caused much consternation on the Late Night set, angering Dave and leading to a legendary showdown between the grumpy talk show host and mischevous A Current Affair producers at the famed Odeon when it was in the shadow of the World Trade Centers. The episode can and must be found in the book, Tabloid Baby.

Mrs. Letterman was found dead in 1998, after she knelt in the path of an approaching train.

Ramones murder: Another day, another suspect

Police remained baffled in the bludgeoning curse-related murder of former Ramones manager turned realtor-to-the-rock-stars Linda Stein. But the New York Daily News reports that the shady past of one of her associates has turned the spotlight to another suspect. "Cops want to reinterview Stein's 26-year-old assistant, Natavia Lowery, who apparently was the last person to speak with Stein before she was murdered, sources said. Lowery was arrested in December on a misdemeanor charge of identity theft. Unknown to Stein, Lowery was accused of stealing a high school buddy's identity and using it to open accounts at Target and T-Mobile. The alleged victim said additional bills were racked up in Virginia."

Sources tell the News that the misdemeanor charges against Lowery were eventually dropped and the case sealed. A friend says, "Linda had no idea about the arrest. She had a few complaints about her assistant's computer skills, but that was it."

TMZ marks a millstone in pop culture history

With a headline that read "Thanks for the Mammaries," the corporate porn-pushing gossip site TMZ.com marked its second anniversary in its usual sublime, witty, literary fashion (and they're bright enough to let us know the photo at right is a "composite").

But does the subhead "Close your eyes and blow" mean that they cheaped out and recycled a birthday card for one of its producers?

Regrettably, we thank TMZ for provoking two years of Tabloid Baby postings.

EXCLUSIVE! MICHAEL LOHAN SHOW DRAWS 100,000+ VIEWERS ON YOUTUBE! Lohan backtracks; admits he's got a series; still sulks

In less than 48 hours on YouTube, the pitch tape for The Michael Lohan Reality Project has registered 101,866 viewers-- with the number growing in leaps and bounds every few hours as YouTube refreshes its viewer count. The overwhelming success of this real-life reality series is dampened only by Michael Lohan himself, who stunned many people this morning when he told E! Entertainment News that the video was "pirated from me and then spliced together with a title that made it look like some show I was putting together."

After producer Burt Kearns of Frozen Pictures set the record straight with the E! gossip reporter, Lohan came clean this evening:
...the elder Lohan is clarifying his remarks... after being called out by the clip's producer, who claims Lohan is having second thoughts because of scenes featuring Lindsay.

"It was shot as a documentary, documenting what I was doing for Teen Challenge (a youth-outreach ministry). It's not a reality show at all, that's the truth"...

"This is not a reality show like Dina's show. Not like The Simple Life. It's a documentary that follows Michael as he tries to rebuild his life, tries to rebuild other people through his ministry work and tries to rebuild his own family," Kearns said...

"Michael Lohan is a little embarrassed by it. He's very afraid of going against Lindsay. He's worked very hard to stay on the right path with her. And so, unfortunately, Michael isn't telling the truth."
"The shots of me talking about those terrible pictures of Lindsay, that was to show my honest reaction to what happened, what abusing drugs and alcohol can do to one person's life, and it was all for Teen Challenge," he (left, dressed for the reality shoot) says, adding that he's called his daughter to explain he was no longer pursuing the project.

"There is no shooting going on right now... And I promise, even if the show is picked up, I don't care, I'm not participating," he said.

Kearns also thinks the Lohans' troubled history is what's coloring Michael's recent comments.

We spoke exclusively to Kearns this evening:

TB: Michael's calling you a liar. Are you a liar? Liar?

Kearns: "I really like Michael. I feel for him. And I really like working with Michael. I think he's a really special person. Sadly, both our fathers are ill. He's been very supportive. Everything Michael is saying and doing shows why he is such a great subject for this documentary reality series."

TB: But he called you a liar! Liar!

Kearns: "We're cool. We're all like family here. A big Irish-Italian family. Every step closer to the truth that Michael takes is a great step forward."

TB: Yeah right. He says he's not working with you. Contract or not!

Kearns: (laughs ruefully) "No worries, mate. Today Michael admits it was a documentary project. Tomorrow he'll admit we're pitching it as a series. And hopefully next week, he'll be starring in it. "

Israel Baseball League's future: Oy, such a mystery!

“Elli, your articles are enjoyed
by all the IBL players
whether they admit it or not.
Most won't talk to you
because they are worried
about the league finding out
and not getting resigned.”
--Ra’anana IBL Player

That comment from an anonymous Israel Baseball League player is an optimistic one, as there’s still no word from founder Larry Baras or anyone running the IBL about rumours that the beleaguered league’s second season is about to be canceled before it begins. Our Man Elli in Israel brought us the exclusive report this week, noting, “There has been no news from the IBL on the league's future, and their Web site has not been updated since August 31.”

And that roar of silence continues tonight. But fans, players and others connected to the IBL are commenting, albeit anonymously, about unpaid bills, mismanagement and other problems that plagued the IBL throughout its maiden voyage.

But one person does put his name to his comment, and that’s Ryan Crotin, the Petach Tikva Pioneers All Star who was one of the few IBL players to support the findings of Elli Wohlgelernter’s original exposé-- the one that’s come to define the league in the eyes of many:
“I think the news story was true and accurate and powerful. I hope all players, management and spectators read the details mentioned for higher awareness… If we do not expose problems, the league will ultimately remain in status quo… They (management) have to spend money on particulars to improve the treatment of players, for if the players are unhappy with whatever circumstances that can arise, then you have nothing.

"The players run the league. They are the league's product.”
Today, Ryan comments again, with a reminder that good came from the first—and potentially last—season of professional baseball in The Promised Land:
"Say what you will about the food, the accomodation, the venues, the money and related issues regarding payment and all other weakly managed enterprises. But do not be mislead about the talent that we witnessed over the past season. By majority, there were inexperienced players at the professional level and the IBL allowed such individuals to gain experience and hopefully market themselves to other professional affiliates.

"I must say, witnessing the kind of presence that Eladio Rodriguez, Gregg Raymundo and Jason Rees brought to the game was as good as anywhere. The league must be commended on its efforts to provide opportunity for those who without it, would have none. Rees would be another Australian, overlooked by geographic distance and Eladio would be another Latin player who was released too young and not given time to mature. I am thankful that both of them can live out their dreams and it began with one swing in the Promised Land and we were all a part of it."

Lohan Tape: Perez Hilton sets the record straight!

Michael Lohan may have denied he's pitching a reality series, but he's getting his message about hope, salvation and the importance of family across to world, thanks to the video trailer for the proposed Michael Lohan Reality Project that was produced by Frozen Pictures and first revealed here. With about 100,000 views on YouTube in less than two days, his show is shaping up to be a hit-- if some network titan is brave enough to put this charismatic and very human public figure in the center of a documentary series-- and counter the manufactured fake "reality" his ex-wife Dina is ready to spew on the E! channel.

Meanwhile, while the E! Entertainment gossips were strangely one email short of getting the Lohan story right (conflict of interest, anyone?), the definitive Hollywood gossip source, Perez Hilton, straightens out the facts this morning:

Daddy's Lying

Burt Kearns of Frozen Pictures, the producer of the Michael Lohan “Reality Project” is denying Lindsay’s father’s claims that he is not trying to sell a reality show.

“We don’t know who leaked the tape, but the pitch tape for the Michael Lohan reality project is REAL,” Burt tells PerezHilton.com.

“Michael is lying,” he adds. “Michael’s show is TRUE REALITY. He has been in pitch meetings with the tape. The show has been documented. Look at this post from July. E! was the first network to reject the show because they have a deal with Dina! But thanks to you it is becoming an Internet hit.”

You’re welcome!

Too bad Daddy doesn’t want it anymore!
Don't worry. He'll want it...

EXCLUSIVE: Michael Lohan denies reality series! THE PRODUCERS STRIKE BACK: "It's real! Yes, there's a reality show! No, it's not like Dina's!"

Michael Lohan is quoted by E! Entertainment gossip Tina Dirmann this morning, denying he’s involved in a reality television project:
"No way," Michael Lohan exclusively tells E! Online. "I am definitely not looking for my own reality show. That's Dina's thing and I've got my own thing."

As for that video that's been floating around YouTube— the so-called Michael Lohan Reality Project featuring 10 minutes of footage showing the Lohan patriarch alternately in prayer, going to divorce court, talking about Lindsay's meltdowns and working with a lady from an organization called 'Hookers for Jesus'—Michael swears he wasn't behind it.

"That tape was pirated from me and then spliced together with a title that made it look like some show I was putting together," he says.

"Some of it's footage for my ministry's promotional campaign, and some of it is just other stuff thrown in, like me going to court," he continues. "But most of that footage was actually for a promotional video I was doing for Teen Challenge."
Well, Miss Dirmann may be a good gossip, but she's got some work to do in the reporting department. The Michael Lohan Reality Project pitch tape is the real thing, all right, and sources tell us the Lohan project was first pitched to E!, but rejected because the network already had a deal with Michael’s ex, Dina.

“The Michael Lohan Reality Project has been in the works since 2004. The shooting was interrupted when Michael went to prison,” says producer Brett Hudson of Frozen Pictures. “We picked it up again after Michael’s release."

“I can understand why Michael denies he’s pitching a ‘reality show,’ especially after Lindsay’s new boyfriend supposedly denounced Dina’s reality series. But this project is nothing like the manufactured ‘reality’ of a Simple Life, or the phony image Dina’s presenting on E! This is raw, real life— a documentary project that takes us inside one man’s struggle to rebuild his life and family after hitting bottom, and his desperate efforts to reach out and help his daughter after seeing her make the same mistakes. Michael's got nothing to hide. And Lindsay would be proud. This project will restore 'reality' to Reality Television. As for the tape, I don’t know who let it out, but it’s the real thing."

“The project is real and the tape is real,” adds fellow producer Burt Kearns, currently in post-production on the Frozen Pictures documentary film, The Seventh Python. “The progress of the project has been documented on our website (Frozen Pictures) since the spring and we’ve been pitching the series the past month in New York, Los Angeles and London. Yes, Teen Challenge is a huge part of this. No, this is not ‘Momager.’ Yes, this is a real project. No, the tape that got out is not a spliced-together fake.

“In fact, since it’s gone over so well on the web (approaching 100,000 views on YouTube), we’re thinking of rolling this out as a webisode series.”

Stay tuned for more.

EXCLUSIVE! Rough cut of the "homeless" segment from the wild Michael Lohan Reality Project! (Somebody put this great comedy on TV!)

© 2007 (and please don’t sue!) Frozen Pictures

VH1's Best Week Ever appeals for Lohan show

The pilot pitch for The Michael Lohan Reality Project we brought you has turned out to be a hit on the Internet. YouTube, MediaBistro, Perez Hilton, and now VH1's Best Week Ever see the show for what it is: compelling, hilarious and very edgy reality that's even realer than it seems.

Alex Blagg writes:

Dear Hollywood Producers and Studio People,

I know you guys are busy right now rolling around in your money bins and wishing you were imaginative enough to think up new ways to f*ck over the writers who helped make you rich, but allow me to pose to you this modest suggestion for keeping hilarious comedy on the air without the help of the people who create it for you: look at this clip reel, and for the love of God, give Michael Lohan the reality show he so desperately wants. Who needs Jim & Pam & The Office when we can have this scumbag wandering around Hollywood with hookers babbling about Jesus, flying through the air with Bibles, and trying to “save Lindsay” by being a total moron? The most talented comedy genius on the planet couldn’t come up with this stuff, so this really couldn’t have come at a better time for you guys. Please, if you’re listening, put this show on the air.

More praise for The Michael Lohan Reality Project!

Thanks in great part to the rave from Perez Hilton, word is spreading around the world about the trailer for The Michael Lohan Reality Project. As more websites pick up on the news, the clip posted on YouTube has received more than 53,000 views since yetserday afternoon.

And overwhelmingly, folks want to see more!

Fishbowl LA says: "Michael Lohan is ready and willing to serve in the ranks of Reality TV!"

Times Square Gossip gets deeper into description:
"This is the tape you have to see... It's sad as Michael really wants to be with his family, he wants to be a part of their life. In this pilot, you get to meet Pastor Jimmy Jack, Michael's mentor. You also get to meet Annie Lobert who runs a ministry called ' Hookers For Jesus'. You see footage of Annie telling us she was a prostitute and high class call girl in Las Vegas. When Lohan arrives at her hotel room, she warns him to not sit on the bed. Then Michael Lohan talks about better days in his life and shows us photos of ex-wife Dina and the family while sad music plays in the background then pulls out a huge enlargement of Lindsay passed out in a car. Yes, that famous photo. Then he pulls out her mug shots from when she was arrested. Slide ahead and you will find Michael Lohan dressed as a homeless guy begging for money for food and when a guy gives him some, he says, 'Keep it, I'm Michael Lohan, Lindsay's dad. I'm working for Teen Challenge." At the end, the narrator says 'Will he save his daughter, can he save himself. The Michael Lohan Reality Project'..."
And viewers of YouTube are as enthusiastic as the Perez crowd:

reverendramona:
I love those cheap "Like a Prayer" special effects there...

emanzeme:
So he's trying to better himself. I don't agree with his choices in life

eklf:
"high-class hooker" haha i dont think so!
how funny is the "fathers love" music in the background with clouds..

Daughter has an alibi in Ramones curse murder

As we’ve shown over the past few days, a read between the lines of stories in the murder of former Ramones manager Linda Stein indicated suspicion cast in the direction of her 32-year-old daughter, Mandy Stein.

Mandy directed the Johnny Ramones documentary, Too Tough To Die. She found the bludgeoned body. She ran the NY Marathon on Sunday. Now, according to the NY Daily News, she’s got a bigtime attorney, Ed Hayes (the model for the laywer in Bonfire of the Vanities) and a “rock solid alibi.”

The News says that Mandy met with cops and prosecutors two hours Saturday.

"She has nothing to hide," said Hayes. "She has an absolutely tight alibi, composed largely of strangers. What she doesn't have is any blood on her or her clothing, and no motive-- she loved her mother, there were no disputes.

"Mandy went from a business meeting, was walked to the subway by one of the people at the meeting and came home and found her mother. She was in the same clothing she wore all day when police arrived. She was not covered with blood. She had no bruises on her hands."

Hayes said Mandy Stein went alone-- no lawyer-- when she met with the law. "She loved her mother. There was no dispute that day, nothing," he told the News.

Cops say they have no prime suspect. Because of tight security in the building, it’s likely that the killer either knew the victim or work dint he bulding. Sources say they’re looking again at Stein’s other personal staff and at least one construction worker with a prior burglary arrest and a swollen hand.

The New York Post says that cops removed a section of Linda Stein's metal apartment doorframe, hoping it will yield a "ridge detail print" - a fingerprint or other portion of the hand - that could identify a suspect after lab analysis. They also removed a portion of Stein's bathtub drain and pipe.

Police are studying Linda Stein’s emails. They have not found her will.

WORLD EXCLUSIVE: OUR MAN ELLI REPORTS: IS THE ISRAEL BASEBALL LEAGUE ABOUT TO CANCEL ITS SECOND SEASON?

Players say Baras making good on bounced checks

Too little, too late?

By Elli Wohlgelernter

Despite having paid off almost all its debt to its players, the Israel Baseball League still faces massive financial problems, sparking growing rumors that the second season is about to be canceled.

"It makes sense," says Michael Rollhaus, general manager of the league champion Bet Shemesh Blue Sox, and one of the major investors in the league. "There are no fields to play on, as Gezer and Baptist Village were not paid this past year. So if there would be a second season, they would have to be paid for last year, and the league would have to pay for next year in advance. There is also no Tel Aviv field, as that has been torn down."

While the league conducted tryouts for next season in Massachusetts during the last week of the 2007 season, it is unclear if there will be a second season. There has been no news from the IBL on the league's future, and their Web site has not been updated since August 31.

Sucks

Nate Fish, third baseman for the Tel Aviv Lightning (below right), said it would be sad if the league were to close after one season, but that he's happy to have been a part of it.

"It sucks that Israelis will be deprived of a great game that they might have loved," Fish said. "In the end though, no big deal either way-- there are more important things. I do give Larry [Baras, founder of the IBL] credit, though. Besides running a half-assed operation, he tried something most people wouldn't, and gave us all a memorable experience."

Some players are still angry at the league for the way they were treated both during the season, and since the season ended on August 19. Most of the players have been paid, though some are still owed some money. Jesse Michel, catcher for the Ra'anana Express, said his salary has been paid, but the league still owes him money that the bank charged for a bounced league check.

We call IBL headquarters in Boston for comment
"Of course no one wants to owe people money, but unfortunately this is where we are right now," he said. "There isn't much I can do about it but wait patiently. And I know this is not the way that they want to run their business, and am confident that as soon as they have the financial means, I will get paid.

Lousy

"Of course people are upset, and were upset, and trying to get answers. But ultimately, what can you do? The league goofed financially, and both sides are feeling the brunt of those mistakes. I'm confident that the league is doing everything it can to make things right."

Scott Cantor, a pitcher for the Petah Tikva Pioneers who was the oldest player in the league at 51, said he too has been paid his salary in full, but is also owed money that the bank charged for the IBL's bounced check.

But Cantor said the money issue was just an example of the systemic problem of the whole running of the league, and the treatment of its players.

"I felt disappointed with the money situation, mainly that the league that I am involved with is so bush league in many respects," Cantor (left) said. "And I'm open to the possibility that these types of shortcomings are not unusual. But they hurt themselves more then anything else, with sub-standard fields, bounced checks, lousy nutrition, ill tempered managers, and serious communication problems with the players, coaches and managers. All these add up to either less then good player performances, or turning people off to a wonderful concept and a great game."

Rebuffed

Cantor said he has tried to reach out to the league to help, but has been rebuffed.

"Personally, I have offered thru e-mails to speak with management about the Pioneers, and about the league. I have reached out on the pay issue, and have requested info on next season. No response. I feel sad and hurt. I emptied my insides for that team last season, 'cause that's what I do, and I struggle with the lack of any direct communication from the league including not getting a response to my emails.

"We formed a community around this league, and the mistake being made is leaving the league's greatest strength out of the loop. Everyone or almost everyone wants nothing but success for this thing, and those in charge act as if it's just them. Re-grouping may be a really good idea."

Michael Lohan reality trailer an Internet smash!

VIEWERS TELL PEREZ HILTON, YOUTUBE:
"PURE PIECE OF TELEVISION GENIUS!"
"I WOULD WATCH IT!"
"I COULDN'T TURN IT OFF!"
"I PRAY SOMEONE PICKS THAT SHOW UP!"

The votes are pouring in and the message is loud and clear: Who needs Dog The Bounty Hunter when Michael Lohan's in the wings?

Hours after we revealed the much-buzzed about pitch tape for for The Michael Lohan Reality Project-- or I Love Lindsay-- from our pals at Frozen Pictures, thousands upon thousands of people have viewed it here and on YouTube and are howling in laughter, outrage and demands to see more! We told you that a lot of television network execs thought the show was too edgy, that the "r" word (as in "religion") off limits-- but that was before The Dog showed his true colours and we members of the WGA walked out and left the nets about to be high and dry.

And that was before Internet bad boy Perez Hilton posted the clip and bestowed it with the ultimte pop culture imprimatur:
Click here to watch the pitch tape that Michael Lohan has been showing networks in his attempts to get a reality show.

It’s just as wonderfully bad as you would expect! So bad actually that no one is said to be interested in acquiring the show.

The majority of the show is about Michael trying to spread the word of Jesus. At one point he even dresses up as a homeless man and attempts to get money from strangers.

P.S. The cameo from Hookers for Jesus is what takes it to a whole other level!
More important, Perez's readers smack it right back at him-- they think it's great!
Rammy says
W…T…F

Hahaha!!!!! says
Cool, I really hope he get’s his own show. Dina got her own show so why can’t he I ask?

sarah-nade says
I say good luck to him. If it keeps him out of the alcohol and stuff then good for him. If it works for him, it works. Don’t be hating!

Kendra says
He should bring it to the 700 Club producers and ask for a weekly 5 minute reality slot. At the very least, it could increase 700 Club ratings to 5 viewers instead of their typical 4 viewers.

Jennifer says
I couldn’t turn it off! Thought I’d just watch a few seconds of it. I think it would be interesting to watch, though I think Michael should be more focused on putting his life together than being on TV.

Meg says
OMG- he’s so full of shit. Does any body actually buy this “I found Jesus” crap? He has a troubled daughter and all that he can think about is himself and his fame. THis is why she’s so messed up! Apart from that: BORING!

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO! Michael Lohan's reality series

As we walk the picket line with our brothers and sisters of The Writers Guild West, we’ve found this pitch tape for one of the wildest reality television projects still waiting to be snatched up. The Michael Lohan Reality Project, aka “I Love Lindsay” -- has proven too edgy for some networks. The series follows Lindsay Lohan’s father Michael, and his attempts to rebuild his life— and his family, after prison and examines the effects of fame on a family while spotlighting the ones who cling to the edge of fame's spotlight.

This tape was made before Michael & Lindsay's reunion in Utah, but Frozen Pictures cameras have continued to roll, and the series promises a much more "real" (or "actual" as they say over at Tru TV) reality than his ex-wife Dina's series at E! Entertainment. But who's brave enough to go for the Anti-Dog? Our pals at Frozen Pictures say the religion aspect proved taboo for some of the development people out there, so they’re now looking to UK networks— or, ideally, a viewing of the pitch tape by Rupert Murdoch himself.

We say the most fun will be deciding if the guy's for real or not.
