New movie pays tribute to Dr. Ruehl

Tabloid Baby pal and contributor Dr. Franklin Ruehl, Ph.D. is the subject of a cinematic homage in a new film that arrived in theatres yesterday.

The film is The Sasquatch Gang, billed as being "from the guys that brought you Napoleon Dynamite" (which is on Tabloid Baby’s list of the Top 50 Movies of All Time). Two years ago, after leading Tabloid Baby pal and award-winning television and film producer Brett Hudson and rock goddess (and Tabloid Baby pal) Cherie Currie on an expedition to the Norway House Indian reserve in Canada to uncover evidence behind a reported sighting of a Bigfoot during the ill-fated revival of A Current Affair, Dr. Ruehl received a call from the producers who were filming in Oregon. The filmmakers asked for permission to use him as the model for the character of the Bigfoot expert.

The Doctor, of course, agreed.

Now, in a year that has seen Dr. Ruehl find tremendous success in his as avocation as a film and TV actor, the movie whose title has been shortened to The Sasquatch Gang, the character Dr. Artmus Snodgrass is a cinematic homage to Dr. Franklin Ruehl.

Dr. Snodgrass is played by Carl Weathers, who portrayed Apollo Creed in Rocky, Rocky II, III and IV.

A new weekly column from Dr. Ruehl

From the early days of the Tabloid Baby website, genius, cable television legend, TV and film actor, certified genius, supermarket tabloid writer and nuclear physicist Dr. Franklin Ruehl, Ph.D. has been a favorite of readers and a valued contributor.

His As Dr. Ruehl column answered questions from across the cosmos, and now Tabloid Baby is honored to announce that we’re picking up his syndicated Realm of Bizarre News column, a phantasmagoria of fascinating and often fantastic facts that has been enterianing and educating email recipients for at least 142 weeks now.

We pick up with No. 143:

This Week's
"Realm of Bizarre News"
Top 13

* Ouch! Chicago gal, 18, developed a massive 10-pound hairball in her tummy from years of chewing on her own hair! The bezoar, which resembled a dead rat, had to be surgically removed!

(Trivia Q: What is the technical term for eating hair? Answer below)

* Incredibly well-preserved fossil of a plant-eating dino, the hadrosaur, has been unearthed in North Dakota. Even its skin and some internal organs were recovered, allowing paleontologists to conclude that the creature may have been striped, perhaps like a zebra!

* Roadkill stuffed animals now being sold for Xmas! The 1st, Twitch the Raccoon, is marked by a tire print across its back. A zipper on each side allows the owner to remove its innards, and is accompanied by its own body bag!

* Understandable, completely understandable! A motorist in Knoxville, TN fired 3 shots into a speed camera with a high-powered rifle, putting it out of commission! Other such hated cameras have been smashed, hacked, and even burned in the states and Great Britain.

* New Yeti footprints have been discovered in the Himalayas in Nepal by an American television team! They will be subjected to intense laboratory analysis to determine if they do indeed represent an unknown species.

* Bad! A serious shortage of prized Hungarian goose feathers, used in pricey pillows, has developed as a result of bird flu and the soaring price of feed. These particular geese are feed a special diet, bathed in the summer, and kept cold in the winter, practices which yield extra-large soft feathers. Couldn’t they just use pigeon feathers instead? They’ll never run out!

* For the third time this year, surgeons at the Rhode Island Hospital have operated on the wrong side of a patient's brain! But the Ruehl solution can easily eliminate this problem: each patient slated for brain surgery should be appointed with a black monk's cowl, with plastic tape placed on the side on which the surgery is to be performed!

* Spooky! The image of a Jesuit priest executed for treason involving the Gunpowder Plot in England in the 1600s has materialized on the cover of a book chronicling his demise... Eerily, the cover was fashioned from the priest's own skin!

* A boy's metal ID bracelet lost some 25 years ago on a farm in Fairmont, Massachusetts, was discovered in the gizzard of a chicken being processed for market. The bird probably dug it out of the ground and swallowed it!

* Moo! A female artist in London is raking in a small fortune substituting cows for humans in her renditions of famous paintings, such as The Mona Lisa!

* Judge in Niagara Falls, Canada, infuriated that a cellphone went off in his courtroom, ordered all 46 audience members arrested, with a bail set at $1500! Ironically, he has been divested of his post as a result of this action!

* Study proves that the number 13 is unlucky, at least, for the British National Lottery. Mathematicians have determined that since 1994, when the lottery was initiated, 13 has come up the fewest number of times. Other unlucky numbers include 6,9, and 11. Contrariwise, the luckiest number is 38, followed by 25 and 31.

* Boy in a Cambodia village and his beloved pet python, Lucky, have slept together for the past six years, and are closer than if they shared the same skin!

(Trivia answer: The technical term for eating hair is "trichophagia.")

Dr. Ruehl takes on the New World Order

For those of you who know Tabloid Baby pal, contributor and columnist Dr. Franklin Ruehl, Ph.D. as a benign Mr. Wizard, successful Hollywood actor, UFOlogist, cryptozooologist, anomalyst, legendary cult TV personality and horror & sci fi movie expert, prepare yourself for the dark side of the good Doctor's practice, in his new role as conspiracy expert.

Over at Video Jug, the online library of professionally-produced videos that strives to become an online "encyclopaedia of life," Dr. Ruehl is offering a two-hour conspiracy symposium called "New World Order":

"We live in a world of presidents, queens and dictators. But who really has the power? Some conspiracy theorists believe that a New World Order is upon us - and that Bilderbergs, freemasons, Illuminatis and other shadowy groups may be meeting this very moment to decide your fate. Dr. Franklin Ruehl details the conspiracy theories surrounding the New World Order, so you can decide who you think is calling the shots on the world stage."

The scope of Dr. Ruehl's individual lectures is awesome and frightening:

The Bilderberg Group
Skull and Bones
The Trilateral Commission
New World Order
The Illuminati Freemasons

He also weighs in on 911 conspiracy theories, CIA mind control, assassinations and, of course UFOs-- not always supporting, but explaining it all-- except for the UFOs, which he does believe in.

Which leads us to one conspiracy theory-- one that resonates particularly in this Presidential election year-- we'd like to see the good doctor tackle despite all it inherent controversies:

Who killed Sonny Bono?

To be continued...

Dr. Ruehl goes Green

Tom Green's Internet talk show, the one he does from the living room of his house, is said to be heading to real TV in January, and on tonight's episode, as they test and work the bugs out of some of the new equipment, Tom's guest will be none other than the very busy authority and actor-- and Tabloid Baby pal and contributor-- Dr. Franklin Ruehl, Ph.D.

Dr. Ruehl, a frequent Green guest, will talk UFOs. The show runs at 11 pm EST, 8 Pacific.

And as a bonus, catch Dr. Ruehl as a swinging hipster beatnik who still manages to express shock and embarrassment when a coffee house poetess flashes her, err, bongos (Ginsbergs? Ferlinghettis?), on AMC at 10 pm and 1 am, all time zones.

Dr. Ruehl stars as skateboarding movie premieres

Skateboarding movies, which usually premiere in board shops to crowds that number in the dozens, have jumped to a whole new level with Nike’s Jackass-meets-Lords of Dogtown motion picture Nothing But The Truth, which is opening with a series of high-profile, big-time premieres around the world, including one this week at Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre and on Tuesday, in London.

And guess which performer is getting top billing in the publicity blitz?

You got it! As the headline already gave away, it's Tabloid Baby contributor, pal and nuclear physicist-turned-public access cult figure-turned mainstream actor Dr. Franklin Ruehl, who has a major role!

“I portrayed a movie producer in the film and I was only one of two actors selected for the London trip,” the doctor tells us of his first trip to Blighty. “I will be departing Sunday for arrival Monday and the premiere on Tuesday.

"And I want to take in as much as possible without getting lost!”

See Dr. Ruehl in the trailer above. And stay tuned here for the latest on Dr. Ruehl’s ascent to movie stardom.

Dr. Ruehl weighs in on celebrity death trio

They Die in Threes! Yes, they do, those celebrities. And now, our learned contributor, Dr. Franklin Ruehl, Ph.D., nuclear physicist, expert on all, the man behind "Ask Dr. Ruehl"-- and a bigtime TV and movie actor, to boot-- weighs in on the latest trifecta of doom that was set into motion by the passing of Porter Wagoner and continued by the untimely death of Robert Goulet:

While I am, of course, enraptured by bizarre coincidences, I have always maintained skepticism regarding
the concept of famous deaths
occurring in 3s.

1st, how famous does a person have to be to qualify?

2nd, what is the time range for the deaths occurring in trios... 1 day, 2 days... or perhaps a week?

But I would like to nominate a possible candidate to complete the trio that includes Robert Goulet and Porter Wagoner, namely, TV's Chef Tell, who also just died. His obit is below.

May the Power of the Cosmos be with You!

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Friedman Paul Erhardt, a German-born cook known as "Chef Tell" who was one of America's pioneering television chefs, has died. He was 63. Erhardt died Friday of heart failure at his home in Upper Black Eddy, about 25 miles east of Allentown, his family said. Erhardt's jolly personality, thick German accent and wit made him a fixture on TV shows such as "Regis and Kathie Lee" and comedy skits on "Saturday Night Live." He was also said to be the inspiration for the Swedish chef on "The Muppet Show"...

TiVo alert: Dr. Ruehl appears tonight on Jericho

The CBS postapocalyptic drama series Jericho has returned from the dead for a second season after a fan campaign that sent 20 tons of peanuts to executives rescued the series from cancellation. And in its second postapocalypytic episode, airing tonight at 10 (9 Central time), there's more reason to watch: Tabloid Baby pal, contributor and columnist (and busy actor) Dr. Franklin Ruehl, Ph.D. will be Skeet Ulrich's costar.

Dr. Ruehl emails:

I am playing a townsperson on "Jericho" tonight, Tuesday, 10PM, on CBS.

I have two brief scenes: one, running up to the newly elected President; the other, in a crowd, listening to a speech.

In one take, where I was running up to the President, my cellphone flew out of my coat pocket in the path of an oncoming tank... I was barely able to rescue it. I doubt if this will be included (although it might wind up in the DVD edition with outtakes).

Reviews welcome.

Dr. Ruehl remembers Beverly Garland

Actress Beverly Garland died at her home in the Hollywood Hills on Friday.
Known for her roles in B-movies and on TV (dig that photo! Whoa!) and the hotel that bears her name, she was also an important part of the realm of Tabloid Baby pal, contributor and columnist Dr. Franklin Ruehl, Ph.D., who offers this appreciation:

Beverly Garland: The Ultimate Feisty Female!
by Dr. Franklin Ruehl, Ph.D.
Challenging a Venusian monster with a rifle! Being hopelessly in love with an alligator-human hybrid! Seeking vengeance as a female marshal! Belting out tunes as a heartbroken torch singer!

These are just a few of the memorable roles that Beverly Garland essayed on the silver screen! Possessed of an innate feistiness, she invariably left an indelible impression on the viewer in whatever role she was cast.

Her initial film, under the name Beverly Campbell (surname from her 1st husband... she was born Beverly Fessenden) was the 1950 film noir classic,
D.O.A., in which Edmond O'Brien was dying from a slow-acting poison and endeavoring to find his murderer. While only in a secondary role, she made an impression on the viewers as a forceful actress.

She became Beverly Garland after marring actor Richard Garland, and among others, starred in five films for legendary B-producer and director Roger Corman. One was 1956's
It Conquered The World, in which, armed only with a rifle, she defiantly confronted an alien being from Venus sequestered in a cave and was promptly killed. Another was 1957's Not of this Earth, in which she battled an extraterrestrial vampire (Paul Birch). And in a change of pace, in 1956's Gunslinger, she portrayed the wife of a slain marshal (William Schallert) who assumes his role... her grittiness made what could easily have been a hokey film very believable.

What I regard as Beverly's finest hour was her leading role in 1959's
The Alligator People, in which the man she had married (Richard Crane, erstwhile star of TV's Rocky Jones, Space Ranger, in what also was his apex performance) begins to morph into an alligator-human combo as the result of a novel treatment for severe wounds he suffered in an airplane crash as a military officer. She was predominant throughout the movie, exhibiting a broad spectrum of emotions, and lending a high degree of credibility to an imaginative storyline.

On TV, in an intriguing episode of
The Twilight Zone, she was memorable as a torch singer, profoundly saddened by the death of her beau (Ross Martin), who then reappears through the shape-shifting ability of a scheming con artist (Harry Townes).

On television, she also starred in two entirely different series. In the drama
Decoy (1957-59), she was a sultry undercover police officer who landed the role by having some exotic photos taken of her to submit to the producers. In the other, the comedy My Three Sons (1969-72), she essayed the role of Fred MacMurray's second wife during the program's final 3 seasons.

Beverly appeared in a plethora of other movies and TV series, last working on
Seventh Heaven as recently as 2004.

On an interesting note, she is, as far as I know, the only actress to have a hotel named after her, specifically, Beverly Garland's Holiday Inn in North Hollywood, CA. As owner, she took a hands-on approach, reportedly even personally checking rooms to make sure they were up to par.

Sadly, Beverly just died at age 82 from a lingering illness.

But with her wide body of work, she will not be forgotten, certainly not by me and her wide gallery of devoted fans.

May the Power of the Cosmos be with you Beverly, wherever you now be!

Exclusive! Dr. Ruehl on his London premiere

As promised, Tabloid Baby pal and contributor Dr. Franklin Ruehl checks in with this exclusive account of his trip to London earlier this week for the premiere of the Nike skateboarding movie, Nothing But The Truth, in which he has a featured role:

BEHIND THE SCENES REVELATIONS
OF “NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH”
by DR. FRANKLIN RUEHL, Ph.D.

Here are some behind-the-scenes revelations regarding my participa-tion as an actor portraying a producer in the Nike skateboarding film, "Nothing But The Truth," as follows:
I had submitted for this role when it was posted on an acting website, Actors Access, last October. I also e-mailed my submission directly to the casting director, James Levine, who had cast me in the USA Networks "Characters" campaign (2005), where I was flown to Dallas, TX to discuss ETs at a UFO-shaped museum.

On a Friday, about a week later, I sent out my weekly schedule of the airing of my cable TV program, "Mysteries From Beyond the Other Dominion." Levine, who is on my mailing list, replied a few minutes later, asking if I was coming to the afternoon's audition, which I did not know was scheduled. I immediately changed into the suit I wore in the film and went down to the audition. Amazingly, I was selected. I'd play a movie producer!

I was highly honored to be 1 of 10 participants in the film invited to attend the Hollywood premiere at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood on Tuesday, October 2. However, this did not turn out to be any sort of media event, as the press did not show up and we did little more than shake a few hands and pose for some photographs. Then, a week later, I was invited to the London premiere along with Dave Vescio, the actor portraying my producing partner. But since I was without a passport, I did not think that there was even the remotest possibility of attending.

The best beef I've ever eaten!

However, they agreed to underwrite the cost of an expedited passport ($352). I applied for it on Wednesday, received it on Friday, and flew into London on Monday afternoon. On the flight, I had a beef dinner that was absolutely tender and delicious, ranking up there with the best I have ever eaten!

We had no trouble whatsoever finding the driver waiting to drive us to the hotel.

Some time later, we were comfortably ensconced in the Cumberland Marble Arch Hotel at $280 a night.

While the hotel room was beautiful, including a plasma screen TV, neither the microwave nor the iron worked, and my electric shaver was inoperative, even with an adapter the concierge gave me.

The pulse of London

I had hoped to take in a tour that would include the Tower of London, but because it was late in the day, the tour facilitator indicated that it too late in the day. I spoke to an underground ticket clerk, but she said I would have to take two or three connections to reach the Tower from there and I was concerned about getting lost on my 1st day in London.

However, I did take an extensive walking tour down to Bond Street. What impressed me most was the pulse of the city, where everyone was moving along speedily, even an old woman with a cane. I enjoy walking at a fast pace and I love the fact that the pedestrians barrel right through red lights and stop signs, very much like New York.

You feel this energy of the city, which is stimulating and motivates you to work harder to succeed, totally different from laid-back towns like L.A. and Chicago where folks are just moseying along, dutifully obeying the traffic signals.

Indeed, one cabbie summarized it perfectly, saying that the pedestrian is king in London!

What impressed me most about London was the pulse of the city, where everyone was moving along speedily, even an old woman with a cane. I enjoy walking at a fast pace and I love the fact that the pedestrians barrel right through red lights and stop signs, very much like New York.

While the hotel business center closed at 8PM, I found an internet cafe nearby and went online at $3 per hour (I had converted some American money into English currency at the outrageous rate of 1 pound for $2.10.

Although I had been up since 9 AM (L.A. time) on Sunday, I was not the least bit sleepy, but forced myself to retire at 2 AM (London Time), some 33 hours later. However, apparently due to some degree of jet lag as I awoke around 6 AM, could not get back to sleep, and got up and turned on TV.

The big event: "Yes! Yes! Yes!"

A light rain fell until about noon, at which time I took another walking tour around Hyde Park and points beyond. We had been slated for rehearsal at 4 PM, but that was scotched at the last minute. If I had known, I definitely would have taken the Tower of London tour. But I did take another walking tour and spent a lot of time browsing in Sainsbury's.

Around 6:30 PM, we arrived at the Royal Festival Hall where we were positioned along the red carpet with a TV crew, where we were interviewing attendees. Dave held a mike while I was covered by the camera microphone... they liked my energy and felt a mike might limit me.

Basically, we kept in character as movie producers, asking individuals what their hobby or area of expertise was in, offering to make a film about with the condition that they post $50,000 upfront as a show of good faith which would be returned with a healthy profit once the production was completed. We had a wide spectrum of reactions, from skepticism to belief, and it made for good television.

We then got on stage and made a few introductory comments. I stressed that this film proves that skateboarders are as athletic as anyone who plays soccer, American football, baseball or tennis, that they are indeed genuine athletes!

I ended by delivering my signature parting remark, "Now... May the Power of the Cosmos be with You! Yes! Yes! Yes!" I then proceeded to jump off the stage, shouting, "Who needs a skateboard?"

Apparently, this went over well with the audience as I received a solid round of applause at my first appearance in the film.

Starving to death!

After the film, we went to another venue around 10:30 PM for the post-premiere party where we were interviewed by various reporters from publications and TV stations, such as from Denmark and Spain in addition to the UK. And we shook hands and posed for photos with many of the guests.

One frustration involved food. I was literally starving to death! Although we were the first to arrive, we were told food would be available in a few minutes. But in that interim, the site was suddenly packed with guests and I was not able to get anywhere near the food line. However, a beautiful blonde, Suzanne, heard my complaint and stood in line to secure some scrumptious fried chicken for me!

Taxi trouble

Around 12:30 AM, the interviews had concluded and I decided to leave, not really being a party animal. Dave wished to stay, so the project coordinator gave me English money for a cab. But there were no cabs outside and a staffer told me to go around the corner and up the street to find one. Along the way, I even rapped on a hotel door, shouting to the security guard inside to call me a cab, but he adamantly refused. I did spot a few cabs as I walked, and ran toward them, trying to hail them. But one after another zoomed by, perhaps having passengers already.

This continued for several blocks as I walked along the Thames, shouting and waving my arms in anger. Suddenly, a police car pulled up alongside of me and an officer asked what my problem was. When I requested a ride, back to the hotel, one cop instead suggested that I wait at a nearby corner for a passing taxi (at least, I wasn't arrested). But ultimately, after about an hour, when none materialized, I walked back to the party and fortunately, at 2 AM, caught a shuttle back to the hotel.

Even then, I was concerned that the driver might quit midstream, as there were several inebriates aboard who were getting pretty wild-- even yelling at him.

The produce-sniffing dog

The flight home, taking off around 11 AM, was basically uneventful except for the fact that the plane was freezing. It made London feel like it was the Sahara! Indeed, the gal beside me asked for the blanket I was not using.

Finally arriving at LAX about 2 PM, I was waiting in the customs processing line when a female officer arrived with a Bassett hound who was sniffing everyone's luggage. But instead of drugs, he hunted for produce. He detected food in a few piece of luggage including one man who had a beef jerky wrapper in his suitcase! But the pooch passed right by my case, which contained a candy bar.

Overall, I enjoyed the experience thoroughly and am ready for my next premiere!

Dr. Ruehl stars in Ed McMahon's rap video

Reports in recent days that beleaguered TV icon Ed McMahon is making the most of his recent financial troubles by appearing in a "rap" video ad for a credit reporting company left out the most important part of the story: Tabloid Baby pal, contributor and columnist Dr. Franklin Ruehl, Ph.D. is McMahon's co-star in the clip!

The good doctor, wjo along with his genius and tabloid work is very much in demand as an actor in TV, movie and music videos, tells us:

"I portray a street preacher in Ed McMahon's new internet segment, an ad for Freecreditreport.com entitled 'McGangster,' in which he sings a rap song about his financial problerms, rides a pit bull and two hotties, dances with several folks, is in a barber shop, and is yelled at by a street corner preacher--portrayed by yours truly!

"Ed shot the ad over a two-day period (Sept.22 & 23) in Los Angeles, including scenes in many "gangsta" neighborhoods.

"He was quite congenial, shaking all of the cast members' hands.

"In one dance scene in a motel room, where everyone was dancing around him as he rapped, he asked that cast members endeavor not to bump into him as he did not want to fall, considering that he broke his neck during his last fall.

"I portrayed the soapbox preacher(actually,on a street corner on a soapbox with my Bible, waving a 'REPENT' sign and wearing my 3-tailed raccoon Stetson hat."
