DANNY GANS BOMBSHELL: MANAGER SAYS VEGAS STAR DIED "A COUPLE OF HOURS" BEFORE HIS WIFE CALLED 911

LEILA NAVIDI

In a shocking interview with the Las Vegas Sun, Danny Gans’ manager has raised disturbing new questions about the circumstances of the musical impressionist’s drug-related death.

Chip Lightman, who was first to receive word from Gans’ wife Julie that the Las Vegas Strip star had died in his bed early on the morning of May 1st, indicates that Gans may have died hours earlier than police reported, and that Julie Gans phoned Lightman a half hour before she called 911.

STEVE MARCUS/LAS VEGAS SUN

According to the incident report from the Henderson Police Department, Gans’ wife Julie (“Julia”) awoke “at approximately 0340 hours… and realized Daniel was no longer snoring. When Julia checked on Daniel she realized he was unresponsive and she could not tell if he was breathing and or if he had a pulse.  Julia immediately called 911.”

Lightman, however, tells Sun columnist John Katsilometes that Julie Gans called him at 3:15 a.m., and told him that Gans had died “a couple of hours ago.”

I get a call at 3:15 in the morning, and it’s Julie, his wife, and she goes, ‘Dan is gone.’  I’m like, 'What!?’  At that moment, it was like I was dreaming.  I didn’t think I was awake and on the phone, and then I go, 'What do you mean?’ And she said, ‘Danny died, Chip.’ I’m saying, ‘No.’  She said, ‘Call whoever you have to call and let them know, and I’ll talk to you later.’

“I asked, ‘When did it happen?’ She said, ‘A couple of hours ago.’”

Henderson police report that Julie Gans called 911 at 3:44 a.m.

Lightman also responds to a question Tabloid Baby first asked in the days following Gans’ death: why he immediately phoned Alicia Jacobs, the beauty queen turned local entertainment reporter who flaunted her close relationship with Gans, to inform her of Gans' passing.

“I had collected my thoughts, and I thought, ‘OK, how do I get the word out? Do I get Steve Wynn up at about 4 in the morning and tell him?  Or do I call (Wynn Las Vegas spokeswoman) Jennifer Dunne?  ... I finally just called Alicia.  She was the first person I thought of to get the word out, get it on the air, and I knew her number.  When something like that happens, you’re in shock.  Danny had just done an interview with her, and she was fresh on my mind when I thought ‘media.’  I thought, ‘I’ll just call Alicia.’  They were friends, too.”

Lightman’s latest statements are all the more disturbing in light of the fact that they come more than seven months after Gans’ death, with more than enough time to prepare his answers, and after he and others close to the situation have altered their stories more than once to fit new information and circumstances that arise.

And while it's Lightman's backhanded swipe at Gans' widow in an interview to promote the Gans autobiography that stands out, Lightman's latest version also paints a very different picture of Gans.

While he once claimed that Gans seemed to be in perfect health in the days leading to his death, he now tells Katsilometes that the star was ill.

“A few days before he died, I said, ‘You don’t look like you feel well.’  He said, “I’ve been fighting something.  I’m just drained beyond drained.  My shoulder has been acting up, the kids are sick, everyone around me is sick.’  The Wednesday night before he died — we always sat and met before onstage, usually at 7:10 — and he didn’t look good.  He looked worn out..."

He admits that Gans may have been using steroids-- for his vocal cords:

"People said to me, when the coroner’s (report) hadn’t come out yet, 'We know he’s doing tons of steroids, and he had bulked up like the Hulk,' and all this stuff.  And you know, if Dan did that, he didn’t do it around me.  If Dan took any steroids, it was for his voice, to lessen the inflammation on his vocal chords...  He worked out five days a week, and he had a 2,000-square-foot gym at his house."

He even says Gans' Encore Theatre may have been cursed.

“The biggest concern was the room People said it was a bad-luck room, it’s cursed.  Dan was saying, ‘Spamalot didn’t work, Avenue Q before Spamalot didn’t work.  Nothing has worked, and they were very good shows.’"

The Henderson Police Department investigation into Gans’ death was open for almost two months, but no criminal charges were filed.  We do not know if the police looked into the records of Gans' home or Chip Lightman's phone calls.

Julie Gans and her children moved to Los Angeles during that time.  Although the three teenage children have been brought out to speak with the media twice since the tragic death, Julie Gans has not been seen in public.

The Las Vegas news media as a group deliberately avoided any investigation of the circumstance of Gans' death or unexamined private life (Katsilometes wrote the day after Gans’ death about rumours of Gans’ steroid use — but never followed up), and Steve Friess, a local blogger, comp queen, New York Times stringer and close associate with Gans boss Steve Wynn, joined with Jacobs in a campaign to stop any investigation into the death and in fact, have this site shut down.

Public perception of the Born Again Christian, athletic, corporate entertainer has shifted in recent months with the revelations that a pharmacy co-owned by Gans marketed a male erection party pill.  Gans’ children, brought out to face the media last month to promote the recently-published autobiography, changed a story they’d told earlier to acknowledge that their father did take prescription medication.

Lindsay Lohan watch: Merry Christmas, you're alive

Whose idea was it to spread around these photos now? Days after the death of troubled and talented actress Brittany Murphy, troubled and talented actress Lindsay Lohan, who has seen her fortunes fall and her career dip to photo shoots bordering on soft-core pornography, works up some holiday cheer, surely realizing she narrowly avoided the sweep of the 2009 Celebrity Reaper's scythe, with a photo shoot on a beach in Santa Barbara.

Is Brittany Murphy our Karen Carpenter?

Interesting that the Los Angeles County Coroner immediately dismissed drugs as a factor in the death of tragic actress Brittany Murphy-- despite the large quantities of prescription medication found in the home where she died and the perception around town that she had substance issues. And whether the coroner's statement is Danny Gans-style parsing or a legally shrewd move, it has combined with true shock among many people who remember Brittany from her brighter days to lead to hopeful speculation that Brittany died not from excess but as a result of anorexia. Hopeful, because if that were to be the case, Brittany would not be another wasted talent, but a victim of society's cruel expectations, our culture's twisted demands, and the resulting distorted body image among many women and girls. She would be a feminist icon. She would be this generation's Karen Carpenter. She would have died for our sins. At least for the next six weeks until the toxicology results come through.

Michael Lohan weighs in on Brittany Murphy

"My heart and condolences go out to Brittany Murphy,
her family and even my daughter, who all have suffered
and have to deal with the effects of this horrible tragedy
of a gifted and blessed human being."

Michael Lohan, Tabloid Baby's 2007 Person of The Year, was already dealing with a Twitter imposter who claims he's suicidal, new legal troubles with his ex-galpal Erin (and the second high-profile shoe-attack incident in his tabloid career), and worrying about the health of talented and troubled daughter Lindsay, when word of tragic actress Brittany Murphy's premature death at 32 hit a little too close to home.

In the early hours of the morning, he sent us this email:

Update if you care to post...

To rebut all the phony individuals pretending to be me on Titter, my attorney (Stephanie Ovadia), has contacted Twitter's legal Dept., to track down and prosecute the imposter(s). She has also advised me to open a REAL Twitter account, to prove the others are not me.

In the meantime, my attorney (Tony Grandinette) has sent subpoenas out to John Ankleman, Stratis Morfogen, Adam Liberman, John Murray ( Erin's brother in law), Dr. Pitch, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Psych Ward, Marriott, Verizon Wireless and Michael Kors, in order to prove ALL the charges against me are FALSE!

Lastly, my heart and condolences go out to Brittany Murphy, her family and even my daughter, who all have suffered and have to deal with the effects of this horrible tragedy of a gifted and blessed human being.

Regards,

Michael Lohan

Brittany Murphy was the voice of Luanne on King of The Hill

Tragic actress Brittany Murphy, who died of an apparent drug-related heart attack this morning at the age of 32, will remain forever young and naive through her role as Luanne on Mike Judge's animated television series, King of The Hill.

The show ended a twelve-year-run on Fox in September, but continues to be seen in syndication. Brittany's character, Luanne Leanne Platter, is, according to Wikipedia, "sensitive and a bit of an airhead, (and) her conflicts most often stem from her inability to think for herself and her naiveté, which allows others to take advantage of her. She follows a very implicit pattern in the men she dates, which are usually all the wrong kinds."

Will that be the way we remember Brittany?

Brittany Murphy latest 2009 dead celebrity

While we monitor the tragic habits of talented and troubled actress Lindsay Lohan comes word that talented and troubled actress Brittany Murphy is dead at 32. Recently fired from her latest film, lampooned on Saturday Night Live, and widely rumoured to have had a drug problem, the movie star known for trying a little too hard to be sexy reportedly went into full cardiac arrest at her home this morning and was dead before she reached the hospital.

Warnings don't matter in Hollywood. And the Celebrity Reaper is taking no holiday as we head toward the end of Celebrity Death Year 2009.

Lindsay Lohan watch: No holiday from partying

For working Hollywood, it is a weekend of major film openings, big box office and outstanding performances. For talented and troubled (and obviously tired) actress Lindsay Lohan, it is another weekend of hard partying.

Gareth Daffyd Thomas: Now that's funny!

Ever since the admission by Welsh rugby star Gareth Thomas that he's a pillow-biting shirtlifter (You got a problem with that? We didn't think so.) was first reported in a homophobic agony aunt feature in The Daily Mail, we've awaited the other snigering schoolboy headlines from the real down-and-dirty tabs.

But the hedder in The Sun? Fackin' sublime.

For those who aren't fans of Little Britain, the Sun headline refers to the comedy series' character Daffyd Thomas, who lives in the Welsh mining village of Llanddewi Brefi, is a self-proclaimed gay man who dresses in a vast variety of tight PVC and latex rubber clothing and proudly proclaims that he is "the only gay in the village," when in fact, there is a huge gay community in his village and the surrounding area that he utterly refuses to associate with-- a background that could be a hint that The Sun was also commenting on Gareth Thomas' rugby colleagues.

Holiday Outrage! Our Man Elli blasts Garrison Keillor for antisemitic Christmas song swipe

"...all those lousy holiday songs
by Jewish guys

that trash up the malls every year,
Rudolph and the chestnuts
and the rest of that dreck..."

Our Man Elli in Israel is steaming mad over comments by Prairie Home Companion windbag Garrison Keillor after the one-trick radio host attacked some classic Christmas songs-- because they were written by Jews!

In what is probably meant to be a witty column in The Baltimore Sun entitled Nonbelievers, please leave Christmas alone, Keillor writes:

"Christians have stood for it long enough. And all those lousy holiday songs by Jewish guys that trash up the malls every year, Rudolph and the chestnuts and the rest of that dreck. Did one of our guys write 'Grab your loafers, come along if you wanna, and we'll blow that shofar for Rosh Hashanah'? No, we didn't.

"Christmas is a Christian holiday - if you're not in the club, then buzz off."

Elli fumes:

"Is Keillor just jealous that Jews can write better Christmas songs than Christians? He's got a problem that 'White Christmas' was written by Israel Isidore Baline (ed: better known as Irving Berlin), the son of a rabbi? That one, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, is the best-selling single of all-time. There. I beat you to it, Keillor. The Jews do it for the money. Now you got nothin' left to say. And while I grant that ‘Grab your loafers, come along if you wanna, and we’ll blow that shofar for Rosh Hashanah’ is kinda catchy, it won't make Billboard's Top 100. Or 1,000. Or 1,000,000."

We guess Garrison Keillor can blow Elli.

Now, considering that Jew Johnny Marks wrote Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, Rockin Around the Christmas Tree, Run Rudolph Run and A Holly Jolly Christmas, which landed at #7 on the list of the Tabloid Baby Top Ten Christmas Songs, while Christians wrote Ring Christmas Bells and The Little Drummer Boy, it seems apparent the pretentious droner (he was born "Gary") is trying to get a little attention for himself. We used to enjoy Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion radio show from Minnesota-- back in The Seventies. That was before he made an attempt to move up a notch in respectability, leaving the show for New York City, while revealing himself to be an out-of touch elitist and philanderer, dumping his longtime girlfriend and producer Margaret Moos for a former exchange student from Denmark he'd reconnected with at a high school reunion (now that he was the big star). That marriage fizzled, and somewhere along the line there was a Page Six item about the principled married man keeping a love nest for an extramarital cutie before he moved back to Minnesota, and cranked up the sputtering old Prairie Home engine again where it continues to run on his fumes.

Watch this Antisemitism brawl escalate. Though that was probably Gary's intention in the first place.

Triumph of the will: Aussie music exec's 'husband' loses fight for his fortune

A lot of our pals in Sydney are raising a toast to their late friend, legendary music executive Peter Ikin, after his toyboy lover lost a bid for his £7 million fortune.

Poor Petey, pal to Elton, Rod and Billuy died in November 2008-- in what he'd find a deliciously mysterious and scandalous fashion-- in a Paris hotel room at 62, possibly after a fall down a flight of stairs, and shortly after marrying a young Frenchman named Alexandre Despallieres. Before word had spread and shock set in among Pete's mates Down Under, Despallieres had PI cremated and the evidence turned to ashes and was waving around a photocopied will that made him sole beneficiary of Pete's fortune, including a £2 million flat in Chelsea.

Pete's friends and family called "bulls***" on this one. Executors of his original 2002 will went to High Court in London, calling Despallieres' document a forgery, and ob Thursday the two sides reached an out-of-court settlement in which Despallieres accepted that the 2002 version was Ikin's last valid will.

The 2002 will left the money to two Sydney charities, friends, his goddaughter and his nephew Father Gary Perritt, a Catholic priest.

After Pete's death, lots of Aussie mayes came forward with emails in which he expressed worry the handsome young Frenchman was after his money.

One pal tells us: "In this case, justice was actually served! Some good came out of a very nasty situation..."

EO? Uh-oh! Jacko returning to Disneyland

Now that he's safely dead and can't possibly touch any children, Michael Jackson is being brought back to Disneyland. The Walt Disney Company confirmed, after months of denials, that they're jumping on the Dead Jacko bandwagon jump-started by the This Is It movie and will bring the 23-year-old Captain EO 3D mini-movie to Tomorrowland in February.

The 17-minute Captain EO cost about $30 million, was executive produced by George Lucas, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and featured Anjelica Huston as the evil Supreme Leader-- and Jacko in the title role. It featuring lasers, smoke and stars that extend over the seat in front of you. We saw it at Tokyo Disneyland and recall it as being pretty impressive. But that was 20 years ago. The attraction was close din 1998, around the time Jacko was better known as a freak than pop star.

They say it will be a limited engagement. We'll see.

Coincidence that the announcement comes two days after the death of traditionalist Roy E. Disney? We'll see.

Rugby star comes out, journos giggle

The UK Daily Mail has always been a middle-of-the-road tabloid and a primary source for gossip and entertainment news, sho it's a little surprising today to see the old school homophobia popping up in its exclusive report that a rugby star has announced that he's gay.

Yes, British Lions legend Gareth Thomas is a poof. And what are you going to do about it?

The Daily Mail will report the news about the 35-year-old former Wales and Lions captain, uh... straight-faced:

"...he has one of the fiercest reputations on the field, and a row of missing front teeth to prove it.

"At 6ft 3in and 16st of pure muscle, his masculinity has always been an absolute given."

The notion that masculinity and athletic prowess are somehow at odds with same-sex preference is quaint to say the least, but the old-school double standards rears its head there, but it's the punning that follows that belongs back at boarding school where the older boys-- you get the picture:

"...But, as he admits in the Daily Mail today, it was all a pretence, a fragile artifice - and one which came crashing down around his ears on November 4, 2006, following a Wales game in Cardiff...

"Breaking down in tears in the changing rooms of the Millennium Stadium, Gareth finally realised he could not go on living a lie. Keeping his true sexuality a secret was destroying him."

Really? A 'fragile artifice'? 'Crashing down around his ears'? (as in 'arse'?) The big macho rugger weeping like a ninny? Really?

Three cheers for Gareth Thomas.

Give him a hand. It must be hard for him. No pun intended.

Dakota Fanning is Cherie Currie

The first trailers are out for The Runaways, the movie about the Seventies jailbait rock 'n' group fronted by Tabloid Baby pal Cherie Currie, who's played by Dakota Fanning (while the girl from Twilight brings her sullen charm to Joan Jett and Elvis' granddaughter is in there somewhere), and it looks like it rocks tabloid at its finest. Cherie, whether rocking the microphone or a chainsaw (look it up) is a doll (and one of the coolest women we know), and the movie is based at long last on her harrowing rock 'n roll suburban memoir Neon Angel, which we expect to be republished with a cool new cover and hit the best seller list when the movie hits.

The King Family's musical deathbed reunion

The name we remember from The King Family TV show live from Hollywood in the Sixties was that swinging exotica hipster Alvino Rey, who invented a talking guitar and married into the family via one of the four Mormon blonde singing sisters at the center of the series (we'd assumed he was Latino, but he was born McBurney). The family marked the 45th anniversary of their ABC television debut this year with the launch of the retro cool King Family Official Website and, as we might have expected, is wrapping the year with a visit from the 2009 Celebrity Reaper and the death this week of Yvonne, the last of the singing King Sisters, at 90. The site includes a touching family tribute that includes a vivid and moving description of the family reunion that took place at her deathbed:

"During a weekend visit with the family... our Mom tripped and fell and had to be hospitalized. We were told that her condition was not good and that we should be prepared.

"On Sunday afternoon we decorated her room with pictures of her life-- had King Sisters music playing-- she made Tina promise she would never let her go without her make-up, so family friend Heather and Tina did her make-up and hair-- we put a blue silk nightgown on her and covered her with her elegant fun fur coat and asked as many family memebers and good friends who could make it, to come to the hospital around 2:00 PM.

"She was surrounded by 16 loved ones, including her sister Marilyn, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. We sang Christmas Carols, 'Side By Side,' (with the King Family hand jive), 'Nighty-Night' (including all of us doing the soft shoe around her bed), and finally 'Love at Home.' We then said a family prayer and one by one, we told her what she meant to us and let her know it was okay to go, And she did just that."

Alvino died in 2004.
