Ironically, in light of the speculation regarding Gans' drug use, Caliendo tells the Las Vegas Sun that his act at the Monte Carlo "will be my stand-up show on steroids."

The local boys though, they got to speak to coroner Mike Murphy. Their secret? They don't ask questions. They listen. They transcribe. They never, ever challenge an answer. They copy down the party line. Their editors sanitize the story even further so even someone like Steve Wynn would approve.
Even comp queen, Gay Vegas author, former New York Times stringer and Gans cover-up accomplice Steve Friess (left) admitted "Gans' suspected steroid use has been out there for years."

The Jacobs-Gans connection got murkier after this site-- the only news organization to provide constant coverage and updates of this major story-- was attacked publicly by Vegas booster, writer, gay activist and comp queen Steve Friess (right) for asking questions or even covering the story. Friess' motivations came into focus when we revealed that he was in an unofficial same sex marriage with Miles Smith-- Jacobs'executive producer.
It should also be mentioned that the rest of the Las Vegas news media failed miserably in their responsibility to cover a story that had great social, spiritual, economic and historic impact on the city. No news organization investigated the circumstances or history of the paramedic responses to Gans mansion, the talk and rumours that have been flying all over town, or the many leads dangled in front of them.

The local Las Vegas media offered no coverage of Danny Gans' still-unexplained death (though Norm Clarke chased a rumour that Garth Brooks is being courted/courting to take Gans' spot at the Encore) as the mystery enters its fifth week.

As for the Vegas media? From McCloud impersonator Tom Mitchell of the Las Vegas Review-Journal to casino-beholden comp queen and Tabloid Baby stalker Steve Friess (below left, who, after attacking and trying to stop our investigation,
wrote on May 15th that "Gans' suspected steroid use has been out there for years"), not one so-called local "journalist" has investigated the issue that's been the talk of their town even before we broke the news on May 1st and, hours later, John Katsilometes of the Las Vegas Sun tiptoed around the subject.

"I can swear on a Bible I never saw Danny involved with drugs,” said Lightman. “I can’t imagine that being a factor. In my 18 years he’s never done one thing in front of me. Ever. I’d be surprised.”
"...KVBC-TV, Channel 3 entertainment reporter Alicia Jacobs, a close friend of Gans, said she was aware of Gans’ high blood pressure.
“'But he took very good care of himself because of it and he certainly had it under control as far as I knew,' said Jacobs...
"He was an athlete in a lot of ways," said Jacobs. "Who amongst us, that work out on regular basis, doesn’t have a constant ache or pain. I’m sure he took Motrin. I think that’s about as adventurous as he ever got.”
In our talk with Alicia Jacobs yesterday, we spoke about the speculation and talk among Las Vegas insiders, and how conspiracy theories were developing because of an information vacuum. Are these sudden revelations a result of our conversation and interview?
Developing...
The only time she bristled was when asked why she as an insider didn’t report in advance on Gans’ funeral on Tuesday.
“With all due respect, there’s a reason for that,” she said. “You can understand how his family feels. His wife is devastated. Julie is a very private woman and those were her wishes. It was his wishes that his funeral be very low key and private. How could you not respect their wishes? I understand that people want to know what happened, but there will be a more public memorial later this month. Danny was a public figure and a very well known person. His wife is not.”
Las Vegas Gay Vegas guide writer Steve Friess had an article published in the New York Times yesterday. We wonder if his editors at the stately grey lady know what Steve write on his blogsite about TabloidBaby.com and its contributors after we sent him an email asking simply:

"Something didn't feel right to Lightman.
Robin Leach reports on his Vegas Deluxe blog today that:
"Whoopi becomes the first guest artist to perform at the Encore theatre since the unexpected death of resident entertainer Danny Gans last week...

"Here are my first and second comments, in this order: 'Oh, that’s so sad.' Then, after a long pause: 'But I wonder who’s going to care.'
"Yes, that sounds cold. But I meant—and Miles got it immediately—who in the national media will recognize this passing as a significant story? That’s my job and to some extent my function in this community, to determine what of the local news rises to the level of broader significance and interest, and which publication is going to want me to document it..."
How does a 52-year-old health nut die in his sleep? Alas, Friess was not out to dig up those facts. His story turned out to be just another palm-greasing eulogy praising the local religious leader:
"...Danny Gans wasn’t just talking a good game— he meant and lived a set of priorities regardless of whether he was bypassing fame or fortune or critical acclaim. Were he alive today to comment on his death, he wouldn’t give a damn that he never got to release that album or that the national media took scant notice of his demise. He would only care that he won’t meet his grandchildren, that his wife is now alone, that his friends have lost a golfing buddy.
"All those survivors may feel cheated by fate, but they’re not going to feel cheated by him. He gave them as much as he could. That’s what Gans was trying to say all that time. And if we finally get it— if we set aside our notions of what constitutes a successful life for someone in the public eye— then maybe, just maybe, this will be his greatest and most lasting impression."
As it turns out, The Las Vegas Weekly is owned by the same company that publishes the daily Las Vegas Sun, the 2009 Pulitzer Prize winner that is also ignoring the story.
We emailed Steve Friess this morning:
Steve,
"Why is no one in the Las Vegas media investigating what happened to Danny Gans?"
Steve Friess responded:
"Uh, because until the toxicology reports come back it would be irresponsible and inappropriate for legitimate reporters to write baseless speculation? Because a man is dead and a family is in mourning and the state of the nation is not dependent upon exacerbating their grief? Because Pulitzer Prize winning newspapers have better uses of their resources than to 'investigate' something that public documents will reveal soon enough anyway?
"I looked over what you've been 'reporting.' It's all beneath contempt. Ginning up Robin Leach's 'rumors' when the rumors he's referring to have nothing to do with Gans' death, implying an inappropriate relationship with Alicia Jacobs, attacking the local press for having a modicum of dignity and restraint on a story that will come out anyway ... I need to go take a shower now. Blech."
We emailed back:
"Thanks for the honest response, Steve. Can we quote you?"
Steve Friess, well known as the author of the book, Gay Vegas ("Don’t miss the pictorial on Vegas’ most phallic!") responded quickly:
"you bet. this shit'll be on my blog in a few minutes anyway."
Sigh. Not another media feud!
