Chris Montez returns to El Camino College!

Pop music legend performs
Friday, November 19th!

With sneak preview of the Chris Montez biopic!

It'll be a rock 'n' roll homecoming for pop icon Chris Montez when he plays at El Camino College on November 19th, along with another sneak preview of his film bio-in-the-making.

Montez grew up in nearby Hawthorne, California, and enrolled at the Torrance college back in the Sixties, after he washed out of the rock 'n' roll factory after hits like Let's Dance and Some Kinda Fun-- and before his rediscovery by Herb Alpert, which led to a revived career and classic cool hits like Call Me and The More I See You.

Film fans will recall that his hit Let's Dance served as the soundtrack to the frat house comedy classic, Animal House.

Sharing the bill with Chris Montez is Help Light, a band that fashioned a fresh new sound by incorporating the best musical elements from the Sixties, Seventies, Eighties and Nineties. Help Light’s musicianship and songwriting has earned high praise and admiration from a long list of fans and industry insiders, including Beatles producer and arranger George Martin.

The show is the latest stop in a Chris Montez revival that included a rousing appearance at the NY Metro Fest for Beatles Fans in March, and a intimate performance with jazz guitar virtuoso Sid Jacobs at the Pacific Palisades Film Festival in May, and a rocking show that included a set by Gary Busey at the Paso Robles Digital Film Festival last November. At each stop, the music was accompanied by a preview screening of El Viaje Musical de Ezekiel Montanez: The Chris Montez Story.

The nonfiction film is still in production by our pals at Frozen Pictures, and features famous names like Herb Alpert, Tommy Roe and Andrew Loog Oldham. The preview focuses on Montez's 1963 concert tour of England, which featured the Beatles as the opening act-- just as Beatlemania was breaking out-- and Montez's distinct but little-known influence on the group's style and sound.

The concert is a fundraiser for the El Camino College Foundation and the Friends of the El Camino College Library’s Living Archives Project.

Showtime is Friday, November 19 at 8:00 pm in Marsee Auditorium on the El Camino campus.

General admission is $25.00, plus $2.00 for a parking permit. For tickets call: 310 329-5345 (toll free at 800 832-ARTS), or visit the Marsee Auditorium box office, Monday – Friday, 10 am to 6 pm.

As Gary Busey as Buddy Holly would say: Oh boy!

Sixty-five-year-old Tabloid Baby pal Gary Busey is a father again, after his girlfriend Steffanie Sampson gave birth to a boy this morning.

Luke Sampson Busey arrived at 6:40 a,m., weighing 6 pounds, 7 ounces.

The couple released a statement:

"This feels like a dream. We feel so blessed and are overwhelmed with happiness at Luke's arrival."

Mom's 40. Busey was the cameo star of Cloud 9, the classic beach volleyball sports comedy starring Burt Reynolds and produced by our pals at Frozen Pictures.

Paso Robles loves Chris Montez movie

"This is only a preview of our film about Chris Montez-- and it was put together for a convention of Beatles fans..."

Director Burt Kearns' teasing introduction to the preview of El Viaje Musical de Ezekiel Montanez: The Chris Montez Story was more than fulfilled last night as the Frozen Pictures film proved to be a hit at the Paso Robles Digital Film Festival. The screening at the La Quinta Hotel attracted a crowd of filmmakers, actors and musicians, who cheered the music as well as the intriguing and surprising story of Montez's experience headlining a tour of England with the Beatles as his opening act-- the very month Beatlemania broke out in the UK.

Producer Brett Hudson & producer/directorBurt Kearns, star Chris Montez and producer and director of photography JB Blunck introduce the film preview

Brett Hudson, who shares producing duties with Kearns, promised the full movie will be released in 2010. Festival director Benford Standley said immediately that he wants to show it in Paso Robles.

Chris Montez & Gary Busey rock Paso Robles

The town of Paso Robles California is rumbling with the power of rock 'n' roll as the Paso Robles Digital Film Festival rolled on this afternoon with a concert at the Silvester Winery featuring Chris Montez, Gary Busey, Diamond Dave Somerville and Sonny Curtis.

Yes, that Gary Busey, who will be at the screening of his Oscar-nominated turn in The Buddy Holly Story, followed by an exclusive preview of The Chris Montez Story doco from our pals at Frozen Pictures. The line-up was also a tribute marking the deaths of Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper fifty years ago: Montez was Valens' heir apparent, Busey played Holly and Somerville displayed a personality as big as the Bopper's).

Chris Montez movie previews Saturday at Paso Robles Digital Film Festival

The centers of the movie and music worlds come together this weekend in Paso Robles, California when the Paso Digital Film Festival features big time rock 'n' roll and a sneak preview of The Chris Montez Story, the new nonfiction film being produced by our pals at Frozen Pictures.

The Paso Robles festival (in the town where they made the movie Sideways), is in its second year and has already won a reputation as a rollicking and dead-serious gathering of hard-living heavy-hitters from film and music, with screenings, concerts, receptions and panel discussions, with a special emphasis on music, digital filmmaking and children’s rights issues.

While Clint Eastwood was on hand last year, this weekend's lineup includes Luke Perry, Gary Busey, Kathleen Quinlan and Ken Kragen (executive producer of “We Are the World”), among others.

As for the music, Chris Montez will be performing Saturday afternoon with Gary Busey and former Buddy Holly sideman Sonny Curtis, followed by a screening of the preview of El Viaje Musical de Ezekiel Montanez: The Chris Montez Story.

Busey, of course, was a star of Frozen Pictures' 2006 feature film comedy, Cloud 9, written and produced by Brett Hudson and Burt Kearns along with their pal, Academy Award®-winning (The Godfather, Million Dollar Baby) producer Albert S. Ruddy.

The festival runs tomorrow through Tuesday at various locations throughout Paso Robles. For more information, call 323-850-8919 or visit the festival website.

Sunday night in Tulsa: There will be Bloodline

Producer and Tabloid Baby pal René Barnett brings her controversial, acclaimed documentary film Bloodline back home to Oklahoma on Sunday, August 16th, in an exclusive one-night-only event at Tulsa’s historic Circle Cinema.

The movie investigates the popular theory that Jesus Christ married and fathered children with Mary Magdalene, finding the real story behind The Da Vinci Code. It caused a furor upon its release in theatres, has been presented around the world, and has only grown in popularity and influence since its release on DVD.

René Barnett is a native Oklahoman who worked for years with director Bruce Burgess on the project, presents the film on Sunday at 7 pm. The screening will be followed by a question-and-answer session that's bound to be spirited.

Barnett is a veteran producer whose television credits include Ripley’s Believe it or Not and Strange Universe. She is also host of the syndicated radio program Night Vision.

She got her start in radio at KAKC in Tulsa, as the newscaster who also provided occasional live sound effects on "Dr. Mazeppa Pompazoidi's Unfilmy Can Festival," a zany late night show featuring Tulsa natives Gailard Sartain and Gary Busey.

Bloodline runs at 7 pm Sunday night. The Circle Cinema is located at 12 South Lewis (at 1st Street) in Tulsa. More information at 918-592-FILM and the cinema website.

The dead Taco Bell chihuahua was NOT the dog from the classic sports comedy, Cloud 9

Fans of the classic beach volleyball motion picture comedy Cloud 9 can rest easy: the Taco Bell chihuahua who died tragically at 15 was not the little dog who co-starred in the hilarious cameo scene in which Gary Busey just about stole the movie from stars Burt Reynolds, D.L. Hughley, Paul Rodriguez, Angie Everhart, Gabrielle Reece, Katheryn Winnick, Kenya Moore, Bruce Bruce, Rick Overton, Pat Finn, Jeff Altman, John Caponera, Tony Danza and Tom Arnold!

Gidget was the name of the Taco Bell pup who succumbed to a stroke Tuesday. Moonie was the dog who appeared in Cloud 9. Gary Busey plays her owner, who grumbles and grouses while picking up Moonie's droppings. Busey's adlibs were so hilarious that the outtakes were compiled for the DVD extra, "Being Gary Busey."

Moonie also starred alongside Reese Witherspoon as Bruiser in Legally Blonde. Coincidentally, Gidget played Bruiser's mom in Legally Blonde 2.

Moonie and Gidget were best friends, and sometime roommates.

Cloud 9, the 2006 Frozen Pictures co-production written and produced by Brett Hudson and Burt Kearns along with two-time Academy Award® winner (The Godfather, Million Dollar Baby) Albert S. Ruddy, has incredible connections to Oscar® winners remains a pay-per-view and rental favorite in the States while its fame spreads around the world.

And mid-July is a great time to check it out!

Exclusive: British guy comes to America to write book on US-UK relations-- and to meet 500 celebs

We don't subscribe to the idea that British people all have bad teeth. We understand that the island nation discovered fluoride sometime in the Seventies, just as they managed to spin out a chef or two and learn to cook in the past fifteen years. We do hold the belief that all British men have had at least one gay experience, and that even the most lady-killing British male is overcompensating for a buggering in his schooldays-- a prejudice enforced over the weekend when we cracked open Victor Spinetti's book and later on the Virgin America flight home read an Esquire UK article about some hot tart named Rosamund Pike who claimed her hottest romance was with a guy who turned out to be gay and that they and his new boyfriend now go on threesome vacations together, not that there's anything wrong with any of that but which simply isn't so taken for granted in America.

Which leads us to Jules Segal, a young British guy who's arrived in the States to research a new book and embark on a stunt crusade to get 500 US celebrities "to sign a British flag with messages of support for the British people" (the flag will be auctioned for a kids' charity).

Jules pulled off a similar stunt in the UK, in which he got celebs like Cheri Blair, Ian McLellan, Jonathan Ross and Chris Martin, the bedwetting guy from Coldplay and a lot of people we're not familiar with (but who are very familiar in the UK) to shake his hand. He got a lot of publicity and a book out of the deal: Greeting The 500.

Now, like Sacha Baron Cohen, Toby Young and Marco Pierre White (well, not Marco Pierre White...) he's headed across the pond, and like de Tocqueville and Allan Whicker before him, will take the pulse of the big country while exploring the "special relationship" between the UK and the US, and speaking to Americans about their views on all things British, "our accents, our bad teeth, the Beckhams, our music, our common foreign policies, whether we should always go to war together..."

And then there are the 500 celebrities, a list he gathered from a Facebook poll and whom he's approaching quite formally, quite British, actually, through letters and proper channels as opposed to the good old American tradition of stalking.

We like the idea that Jules' project started out as a bet. Jules' mate gave him a list of 500 UK celebs and six months to get his photo taken shaking hands with as many as possible. He need to meet 20% of them to win the bet. Gambling comes into play this time as well:

"Jules has very little money, no full-time job and the residue of a gambling habit. In order to finance his trip, he has placed two bets with the William Hill bookmaking firm. One of these bets relates to how many of the 500 he will manage to meet in 90 days, the other bet will be paid out if amongst others, he meets Tiger Woods, Scarlet Johansson, Kanye West, Emeril Lagasse and Daniel Negreanu and completes a pre-arranged task with each of these individuals..."

The list follows. If you are on it or have an in with someone who is, you can reach him here. We spoke to Jules this week, he comes recommended by our pals at Anorak and we'll be keeping track of his progress.

Jules in in Los Angeles now. He's got quite a task ahead. Some of his target celebs are in prison; one or two may be dead.

Fellow journos: go out and do your jobs, run a feature on The US-Say project and book this guy for your shows.

Garotas Show de Bola! Cloud 9 a hit in sexy Brazil!

Garotas Show de Bola!

Congratulations to our pals at Frozen Pictures! A little more than a week before they bring their acclaimed nonfiction musical film The Seventh Python to the New York audience at the New York Metro Fest for Beatles Fans comes word that their classic Oscar®-connected motion picture comedy Cloud 9 has conquered yet another international territory!

Brazil is the latest nation to embrace the sexy beach volleyball stripper comedy starring Burt Reynolds, D.L. Hughley, Paul Rodriguez, Angie Everhart, Kathryn Winnick, Tony Danza, Tom Arnold Jeff Altman, Rick Overton and Gary Busey and written and produced by Frozen's Brett Hudson and Burt Kearns along with Academy Award® winner Albert S. Ruddy.

And the Brazilians wax enthusiastic, describing Garotas Show de Bola like this:

As super estrelas Burt Reynolds e D.L. Hughley estão hilariantes nesta comédia.

The film struck gold domestically when it was released 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment in early 2006, became a massive hit in India and, under the name Mell Bedobás, warmed up Eastern Europe.

"Thanks for the news! You guys are fast! You reached me before our production partners did!" said writer-producer Brett Hudson when reached tonight.

"But I must say I'm not surprised that Cloud 9 continues to bring money in from all over the world on a continual basis. It's a testament to the international starpower of Burt Reynolds, one of the last of the classic movie stars and heroes-- and I must say, the script.

"The story of aspiration and triumph over prejudice and adversity, speaks to peoples the world over. And it's really funny, too!"
