Farrah fans fume over Playboy "insult"

Fans of the late Farrah Fawcett are up in arms over what's considered to be an insulting, small tribute to the iconic actress in the November issue. Though there were rumours that Farrah, who died in June, would grace the cover of the magazine she'd posed in twice in the Nineties, cartoon character Marge Simpson gets the cover while Farrah gets a mention in smaller type than Stephen King, Tracy Morgan, Benicio del Toro or some Victoria's Secret model.

One fan commented on this site:

"What a slap in the face of Farrah Fawcett. She was THE sex symbol of the 70s and was on the cover of two of the mag’s most successful issues and THIS is how they pay tribute to her? A simple footnote on the cover??!! WTF Playboy? You put that drug addicted, ex-stripper Anna Nicole on your cover when she died but Farrah gets upstaged by a cartoon? How much did FOX pay you for this placement? Huge, missed opportunity here folks. This is why Playboy is barely selling and no longer relevant to consumers-- it is edited by a goofy old man so out of touch. Farrah fans are insulted and Playboy once again missed the boat."

Farrah had resisted appearing nude in films or magazines throughout the 1970s and '80s. When she posed nude in Playboy's December 1995 issue, it became the best-selling issue of the 1990s, with over four million copies sold worldwide. She returned at age 50 with a Playboy pictorial in the July 1997 issue. That same year, she played Robert Duvall's wife in The Apostle and wonan Independent Spirit Award nomination as Best Actress.

  1. I will not be buying this issue!
To think Farrah ONCE AGAIN get's a third rate tribute sickens me.Playboy should know better considering Farrah had 2 of the highest selling issues in the 90's.
She deserves a whole issue devoted to her and if not then at least the cover.
Marge Simpson???? If Playboy think's they are being smart or creative by doing that then they need to think again. VERY SAD

  2. There are actually two covers coming out. The other one is of model Alina Puscau which was shot by Brett Ratner who is developing the Hugh Hefner biopic. Subscribers will get the one with Alina Puscau. Newsstands and Playboy.com will sell the Marge Simpson cover along with the Puscau cover.

They should have done the tribute in September or October to compete with the Vanity Fair cover. They could have used the outtakes/unpublished shots from Davis Factor and Bill Hawkes, along with the Claude Mougin photos she did with Playboy in 1978. She wasn't nude in the 12/78 pictorial but there was some great photos.

  3. I was very suprised Farrah will not be on the cover of Playboy. I was going to buy a few issues. Even Anna Nicole had a tribute cover.I saw the layout inside and it is basically the same photos from her 1995 and 1997 layouts .The first photo is the cover shot from 1978 done in gold background. Nothing new. I do not understand why they print the same photos , there must have been some many nice outtakes . I was hoping the cover would have been Farrah on the bike photo from the 1978 layout. I do appreciate Playboy atleast did something but the cover would have been the best seller of the year maybe the decade. Maybe in the future a Farrah cover or special all Farrah issue Playboy?

  9. I agree with all of you and I will not buy this issue.
charliesangels.com showed the layout to be featured and the photos are the same that we seen over and over. They have sooo many outtakes from all 3 layouts on Farrah and they probably would have had one of the highest selling issues of this decade if they atleast put her on the cover.
I guess if your a drug addict or a former stripper then you get respect and a proper tribute.(Anna Nicole)!

Farrah really got looked over and she had natural beauty and talent which today is considered a flaw.

  11. I think Farrah would have made more sense on the cover. People will look at the Marge Simpson Playboy online , laugh a bit but I doubt anyone will pay 6.00 or 7.00 bucks for it

  12. Alot of the Playboy covers have had reality show girls lately , and understand the sales for the magazine are low. A Farrah cover would have appealed to Playboy collectors , Farrah collectors and fans of sex symbols. I do not think people are into cartoons that much anymore. I guess time and sales will tell.

  15. A Reply I received from the Smithsonian regarding Farrah's poster ...

    Michael

Your follow-up correspondence of 24 September 2009 has been received in the Smithsonian's Public Inquiry Mail Service office.

As mentioned in our previous response, there is no centralized database for the collections of the Smithsonian Institution, which number more than 136 million objects, artworks and specimens. We performed a data search of the most obvious Smithsonian collections - American popular culture, graphic arts, and portraits – but found nothing indicating that any of those collections housed a Farrah Fawcett red bathing suit poster. We also checked various other collections at the Institution’s National Museum of American History, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the National Portrait Gallery to no avail.

It is possible that the Institution has the poster in a less obvious collection and/or museum; however, it is more probable that the Farrah Fawcett web site is incorrect and that the erroneous information has been repeated on many other web sites and via the news media without verification.

A quick data search of Smithsonian Institution exhibitions for the past 25 years found no reference to any special exhibitions that featured artifacts related to Farrah Fawcett, the Charlie’s Angels television show, and/or photographer Bruce McBroom (though the National Portrait Gallery does houses a photograph by Mr. McBroom of Elia Kazan).

We appreciate your interest in the Smithsonian Institution.

  17. It's definitely odd that Playboy didn't put Farrah on the cover. What a misfire. With falling readership, maybe they thought Farrah represented the past and that Marge Simpson would appeal to the younger generation. But I guarantee that a Farrah cover would have sold better, and they could have made it relevant by also having some former Playmates recreate some of her poses, in homage. Plus had one or two distinguished writers do opinion pieces on her. Playboy, you screwed up!

  18. Playboy thinks they are being creative or funny then they need to think again.
Marge Simpson on the cover is plain stupid.
    Farrah deserved the cover!

  23. Of course Farrah has been disrespected again!
Our society gives junkies and d-list talentless celebrites respect. If you have talent and carried yourself with dignity and class then you have no value.
