Jan Hooks, what happened?

We truly regret mentioning it, but for all the political humour dished out on Saturday Night Live this morning, the biggest talking point has to be the ad for 30 Rock featuring the return, after many years, of former SNL hottie (1986-1991) Jan Hooks.

We haven't seen a transformation this startling since, well, Alec Baldwin, with whom she shares her scenes (but at least we got to watch him go to seed gradually).

  1. Jan, you fat hag, at fifty-two you better have a fatal illness to look that bad. Jesus Christ on a cross, your only job as an actor is to keep your self looking good.

Fat titties do not compensate for hagdom.

    1. Wow! I cannot believe the hatred that some of you have inside. What horrible people you are. I would love to see what you look like as you hide behing annonymous and fake screen names. I hope that you suffer the same fate when you are judged one day, and you will. Karma is very powerful and you will get what you deserve. Enjoy yourselves now, Hell has a place for you.

    2. Your just a fucking dick without one asshole

  2. No need to be so horrible anonymous. Shallow and cruel insults only make more hatred in the world. How can you be so disdainful towards someone for their appearance? Be kind.

I too was very astounded by how much she has aged. The problem is obvious--she smokes. Smoking will age people very very quickly.

  3. Agree with 2nd anonymous. I've been on this here internet for a little bit now and seen some pretty rough comments, but Hooks does not deserve such asshole trolling. Yeah she looks horrible, I thought when I saw it, "Man that 75 year old looks a lot like Jan Hooks" Then it was her. Hopefully she can lose some weight and do some other stuff to fix her mess.

  4. I have great memories of Jan in her early days with Bonnie and Terry Turner in Atlanta.

I hope the 30 Rock appearance gets her back.

Let (s)he who lives in a glass house put down the stones and look at yourselves.

  5. This is just pitiful. Here's the bottom line - she used to be hot - and not that long ago either.

When we see celebrities age this terribly, we get scared for ourselves. We still think of ourselves the way we looked when Jan was hot. Now she's not... we're probably not either... and it totally bums us out because we have fewer decades in front of us than we have behind us. That sucks.

But c'mon Jan - lots of women make it from 30 to 50 and don't morph into Jabba the Hutt.

Thanks to drinking and smoking and probably snorting coke - and never watching her figure or setting foot in a gym for 20 yrs... now she looks like a 60-something barfly from rural West Virginia or something, looking for an empty glass to soak her teeth at night. It's discouraging.

    1. For your information, people who snort coke don't gain weight they lose weight. Smarten up, and quit being so judgmental.

    2. Well now she's dead so you can keep your nasty mouth shut and maybe consider that she was actually sick. Either way your comments are disgusting and only reflect how ugly you are inside.

  6. Has anyone thought that she might be on medication that has made her gain weight? As a former "hottie" myself who has gained 50 lbs. over the past 5 years due to medications for a chronic medical condition, cruel comments really hurt. Have some kindness in your heart.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Are we sure she has not been made to look bad by the producers of 30 Rock? Makeup and fat-suits can look pretty convincing these days...

  8. Jan. As a fan, please, take pride in yourself. Maybe you've had some tough times and it's likely there's more than the public knows is going on. Since you've elected to pick up your career once again (and thank you for doing so, because you're comedic honey) please, please do right by yourself.

  9. If she's not the anti smoking poster child I don't know who else should be.

  10. Actually Jan Hooks has been very ill and these comments are really cruel.

  11. Jan Hooks is funny and talented and there is a place for her in television. For the person who said "Jesus Christ on a cross your only job is..... Well you stupid "christian" what is your job?.... To hate, judge, criticise and try to hurt others? Your statement about Jan Hooks actually was a statement about who you are. Nothing else.

  12. I just saw "The Women of SNL" special and Jan Hooks is a wonderfully talented, hilarious comedian and actress. I can't believe the vile, disgusting, and negative comments I've read here. Jan has contributed so much positivity to the world through her ability to entertain and make us laugh - she should be so proud of that. What have you done, haters? Oh right, absolutely nothing......

    ReplyDelete
  13. Please, please, think before you post. Surely there is a reason for the change you see. I am concerned that there is an underlying illness/medical treatment issue here. Jan is indeed talented, and she has brought so much laughter into my life. I thank her sincerely for that and wish her nothing but the best. I appreciate every opportunity I have to see her perform.

  14. Have ANY of the haters on here even considered that she may have a medical condition such as a thyroid problem? Jeex Louise you guys are narrow-minded!!! Educate yourselves. PS- We all know that "haters" are actually self-haters, so I hope you all get yourself some help for whatever your problem is..

  15. I have to say that I was a bit shocked at her appearance beginning from her stint on 3rd Rock from the Sun until now. Some women just don't age as well as others. But, yes she could stand to lose a few lbs. and cut out whatever smoking she's been doing because it is showing up in her looks. Its not too late to reverse it!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I too was shocked at first. But who cares? She can still act. And we need at least one true representation of an American woman up there on the TV screen.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I was surprised on how not so great she looks in these photos so I did some searching after reading the comments to try and find out if she has been ill. I found others asking the same but I have not found any confirmation.

IMDB basically has no info on her but the 6 year gap in acting it shows could be a clue.

I came across 2 other photos at tvguide.com and tv.com and she looks much better in those.

Perhaps as one person commented they made her up to look not so good and those are the pictures posted here and/or just not great stills taken from the video. In the pics here she does not really even really look like herself and she is totally recognizable in the other photos where she is smiling.

The photo at tv.com appears to be from video and at tvguide.com I think it is a 30 Rock publicity photo.

  18. I too believe that she must be on some kind of medication that makes her gain weight. That's what happened to Kathleen Turner. And if she hasn't, if she's "let herself go," so what? The old double standard, as other people here have pointed out. Guys can be fatter than fat, like Kevin James, and still be cast in good roles *and* get the hot chicks...but let a woman gain weight, even one in her fifties, and oh, no, what a "hag."

And of course, most of the guys criticizing her - and other women are probably fat guys themselves, who wouldn't stand a chance with her, either when she was in her prime or now.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh, and smoking may line the face, perhaps...but it doesn't increase one's weight. (Well, unless one tries to *stop* smoking.)

  20. You look great to me Jan honey! C'mon people, not all people on Tv are addicted to botox and plastic surgery. I actually like the natural look. Or maybe u prefer the phoney twats on"Real Housewives". God, the people in this country suck! No wonder the world hates us!LOL

  21. hey,I resemble that remark...Iam 60, and I dont look like Ive been smoking, drinking and doing coke!..lol...some people dont have good genes, but she may be on cortison...did anyone see what happened to Ginger Rogers, of course were talking late 80's she was over or at least looked 300 pounds,..OMG, with 3 huge warts on her face, she was extremly slow in answering questions..wore a big "minnie pearl hat on her head, well, this can sometimes happen to people...what I would say is, people take care of yourself, I go to the emperors college on 20th and wilshire in santa monica, for accupunture...like 38.00 to see a clinician and then the chinese doctor, they have herbs and such...in chinese medicine, one takes care of themself...daily, you dont go in, when your falling apart...there is massage, there is meditation, yoga, body surfing...good luck. lets see how anonymouse fairs....so shallow...LOLOLOLOLO

  22. @The Very First Commenter

Anonymous (because you're a fucking pussy), you moronic joke, at fourteen you better have a fatal illness to be that unintelligent. Jesus Christ on a cross, your only job as a human being is to keep your self respectful and polite to those around you if you'll have any chance of substance and meaning for anyone to give a damn about you in your life.

A big mouth does not compensate for a weak shallow mind.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I dont see a problem with her appearance. The only problem I see is that she left the limelight. She's too talented to stay away from the television screen. Sure she's a bit bigger now, but so is her fellow SNL castmate Victoria Jackson. And Dan Aykroyd ballooned up after SNL, too. It's the talent that matters. Not the physique.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Shut up people. Nothing "happened." YEARS happened. LIFE happened. The ups, the downs, the stress, the attempts to cope...this country is so addicted to women who sustitute botox, plastic surgery, spa treatments and catty lunches with the "girls" for real LIFE that no one even KNOWS what 52 looks like anymore. What? Because she's more TALENTED than the rest of us she should be held to a higher standard as far as appearance goes? She's not allowed to age like the rest of us - not allowed any of the vices the rest of us avail ourselves of far too frequently? HELLO - THIS IS WHAT FIFTY-two LOOKS LIKE. if you don't think so, then try it yourself sometime. JEEZ LOUISE. YOU PEOPLE MAKE ME SICK. You are everything that's wrong with America and then some. Superficial assholes. Is she or was she sick? IT'S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS-GET OVER IT!!! Did she do a phenomenal job on 30 Rock? Yes, she did - and if it weren't for asswipes like you people making the kinds of comments you do, perhaps the hiatus would not have been so long. I happen to know Jan and she is a wonderful person inside and out with more talent in her little pinky than you people have brains in your head. Cut the crap and the double standards.

    1. Anonymous,
Let me show you what 52 looks like. For all you know she may have had a major illness where she had to take some kind of a steroid medication. Disseases like rheumatoid arthritis cause you to have go use medications like prednisone,or other types of steroidal medicines.

  25. I knew Jan in High School and she was, and most likely still is, a wonderful person with a outstanding personality who could make anyone laugh. We were and still are proud of our Jan...she took chances and climed to the top because of her talent. The people making the cruel comments most likely can not even come close to the success and positive influences Jan has left in may peoples life. If you want to see pathetic, look at yourself for finding pleasure in putting someone else down to make you feel good about yourself.

  26. I'm glad some people have picked up the slack and defended her. For Gods sakes, we all age (if we're fogging lucky!). I just love some of the assumptions here. Evidently she 'must' have done too much coke, yeah, right. And last i heard, having a smoke and a cocktail doesn't make you anything other than human. I guess when i was young, I thought I'd look like that forever, too. But youth is the only excuse for the dumb crap here. Always liked Jan, very funny lady.

  27. Holy Christ, I just stumbled on this page and got a look at Jan Hooks...she used to be way hot. In that bottom pic where she was still cute was taken in 1988, that made her (I believe) 31. So this is 22 years later? It looks more like 45 years later. I have to agree with Anon the first poster. I've seen women 20 yrs later who've kept it together and still looked good, Nicolet Sheridan, Linda Carter, etc. To age like this in 20 years you gotta have a raging coke, meth and Twinkie habit. If you are a screen actor, a big part of your job is to maintain your appearance.

  28. To all the negative commentors: wait until all of you assholes hit the 50's and we'll see what you beauties look like. Jan Hooks is fine. Besides, she is famous and all of you will never be. Fame is what you all would love, right?

The woman got older, gained weight, and had a medical issue.... God forbid. And that throws her into hagdom? Sorry you couldn't masturbate to her image any longer.

But, now that she has died you can recant & say how much you ALWAYS respected her work.

  39. Now she is DEAD from an undisclosed illness. Looking back to the original poster, reminds me of the saying; " There, but by the grace of God, go I and do unto others as you'd have them do unto you. She looked horrible because she was dying. Let this be an important lesson. Watch your words or they will come back to bite you.RIP Jan.

  40. Sad time for the comedy world and all of us who enjoyed her talents. LOVED her skit, Pie, on SNL! She was a great actress.

Funny how all these haters hide behind a computer spewing these stupid comments judging a person's looks. You point your finger at someone else, but remember there are three fingers pointing back at you! Don't judge. You don't know what is going on in someone else's life, and you are only tearing them down more with your stupid judgmental comments.

It's what is inside is what is important. Many of Amercians have become so shallow and base everything in their lives on looks and appearances.

Jan brings great memories and leaves a huge hole for many of us.
Prayers for her friends and family during this difficult time!

  47. The beauty is life , and as long as people remember that of anyone they will never die.

But sadly Hollywood put so much on people physical attribute that they will over look their talent to entertain.

Enough of the cruel comments, and the real mystery of life is death and that is the final curtain call.

    Be at peace.

  55. I just watched some old video of Jan Hooks and Bill Hartman playing the ORIGINAL Donald and Mrs. Trump in 1990 and thought about how sad it was to lose such brilliantly talented people so so tragically long before their time. Sadder still that people judged Jan by her appearance while fighting head and neck cancer. Let's judge people by their actions and soul, or better yet, not at all. A little kindness goes a long, long way.
